Subject: xperia pro update questions
Hi

Just wondering, if I update to i c s when the official sony rom is released, will I loose the root privilidges?

Currently, is removing the sony timescape stuff likely to cause me any problems.

Would like to know what I can get rid of?

Hmm,  Not sure about removing Timescape as I think that's the actual UI.
Guess you will have to experiment.  Not sure if you will lose root
privileges when updating to ICS.  Suspect when you do that it will update
the image on your phone so in theory, I guess you could.  Guess you could
reroot the phone if necessary.

Keith.  Were you definitely able to root your Xperia Pro.  If so, how did
you do it?  Am assuming that you first had to unlock the bootloader?

Hi Phil,

I have unlocked the xperia pro.

You are right, you need to unlock the boot loader first.

My starting point was
  http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1286885 but I had to
experiment on the way.

What \I found was that I had to get some java packages before adb would
run on the windows pc.

It was a bit nerve wracking but after I sorted out the java stuff and
got adb working, the instructions then worked.

Good luck and shout up if you need more.

I am hoping that I can upgrade to ics without having to do it all again.

Sorry, just to clear any confusion, you need to use the instructions on
the page I linked to.

The other method posted by Doomlord no longer works because it used an
exploit that has now been patched.

Keith.  Got all of the Java dependencies installed.  Think I even have the
drivers working However, am having issues trying to get Fastboot going.  Am
wondering if I need to install something on the Android SDK.  Here's what
happens when I follow the instructions to the letter.  Am fine until I try
to use Fastboot.

'fastboot.exe' is not recognized as an internal or external command

Have installed all of the Tools in the Android SDK manager.  Not sure what
else to try?

OK.  Figured this out now.  Firstly, downloaded the Android SDK file for
Windows called:

installer_r16-windows.exe

Tried running the installer and that cleverly told me that I required some
Java files.  So, I downloaded the following file and installed it:

jdk-6u25-windows-x64.exe

Also downloaded the X86 file:

jdk-6u25-windows-i586.exe

However, didn't need that.  Again ran the:

installer_r16-windows.exe

file once I had the X64 Java installed  And that ran fine this time.
Downloaded all of the various tools required in the Android SDK manager
including the USB drivers etc.  Copied the:

android_winusb.inf

File into the :

C:\Program Files (x86)\Android\android-sdk\extras\google\usb_driver

Directory as suggested in Sony's instructions.  Turned my phone off and
pressed the menu key when booting the phone as suggested for the Xperia Pro.
Expected a Window to pop up, telling me that I didn't have drivers.  That
didn't happen but, found an unknown device in device manager so, installed
the drivers for that from the:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Android\android-sdk\extras\google\usb_driver

Folder.  Started running the command prompt as suggested in the instructions
available on Sony's website.  However, The instructions are slightly wrong:

http://unlockbootloader.sonymobile.com/instructions

The following is stated:

"Open a command window and go to the tools folder within the Android SDK
folder."

That should read:

"Open a command window and go to the platform-tools folder within the
Android SDK folder."

Because that's where Fastboot.exe and other files that are required to do
this, actually reside.  Successfully unlocked the bootloader.  Was informed
in the command prompt that I had managed to do this.  Pretty easy to do.

Phil,

I had something similar.

I found that I needed to run the commands from the android sdk directory
and I had to copy the fastboot.exe file to that directory.

So what I did was to move fastboot from the zip file to the directory
where sdk is installed.

I also had to copy the boot immage file to the sdk directory.

So, in short, you need to move fastboot and the boot immage file to the
same place and be in that directory when you run the fastboot command.

Also, I presume that when you installed sdk it went and got some extra
packages?

Phil,

Glad you got it.

As you can see, there are some discrepancies in the instructions.

When you get to rooting, make sure you copy the boot immage to the same
directory as the fastboot file otherwise it complains about not finding it.

A bit nerve wracking isn't it.

I should have made acurate notes as I went but there was a bit of
gueswork involved and I was in a bit of a panic at the time in case I
bricked it.

Hmm, am wondering if I got around that issue by  pointing it to the
platform-tools directory?  What is the name of the image file? Didn't get
any error messages and it told me that it had unlocked the phone in 4
seconds.  Also, after I did this and turned the phone back on, I was placed
beckon the set-up screen and had to reinstall accessibility etc.  Finally,
still can't remove some apps such as Facebook and Get Apps, Get Games etc.
Think that's normal though as Sony say something about that on their
website.  Have you had any success removing any of the above?

Phil,

Did you actually carry on and follow the rooting procedure or have you
just unlocked the boot loader?

After you unlock the boot loader, you need to go back to the page I
linked to and follow the rest of the rooting instructions.  This
involves downloading a rom immage from one of the links and using fast
boot to load that rom in to the phone.

Then you need to install busybox from the android market.

#Sounds like you have stopped at the bootloader unlocking part.

From memory, the file you need is xperiaproroot.zip but there is a link
to it from the page I linked to.

When you have done all this, you need to get an app to remove what you
don't want, I got root uninstaller pro but there are other options.

Once you have done all this, you can uninstall anything you like.

Phil,

If you do carry on and root it, you do not need to follow those
instructions as part of the zip archive you will download contains the
stk or as they call it adb files which you already have.

What I did was to get the zip file and the only file in there you should
need is the boot immage as you already have the fastboot and drivers
from the boot loader unlocking.

So just copy the immage to the directory you used to unlock the
bootloader and off you go.

#By the way, I had to unlock the boot loader wtice as when I carried on
with the rooting, it complained that the boot loader was still locked
although I never got any errors during the boot loader unlock.

I removed a lot of the apps that were starting automatically, all the
facebook apps have gone and fun and games.  It does make it boot quicker
and I think that battery life is better now.

Be careful when you are typing in the final string of commands.  You
should not get any error messages.  Some of them produce no response and
others give you a confirmation but if it complains, that is a problem.

Mostly, yes although, when you have rooted and start the phone, you will
have no accessibility on the phone.

I had my daughter with me although, she is not really a techy but it was
handy to make sure that the indicators on the phone were doing the right
thing.

Now that I have done it once, I would not worry too much next time but
if you do have a go, don't blame me if it causes you problems.

Good luck.

Phil,

I take it you are working from the platform tools directory.

There should be a file in there called adb.exe.  This is the shell file.

Is that file present?

If not you will need to find that file.

I will go and see if it is contained in one of the zip files, otherwise
it may be a download option in the sdk.

Phil,

Trying to recall what I did but this sounds familiar.

There is another version of it in the zip file that contains the root
immage.

It is call adb for dummies or something similar.

Could try moving that to the platform tools directory and running the
adb.exe file, nothing to loose, I don't think.

By the way, on a lighter note, Kirsten, my wife, is asking for you.  She
says you were at school together.

Rooting is the only way to have full control of your phone.

There is a lot of stuff put on by sony that is not accessible and is
taking up resources.

Mine is considerably faster now and battery life is much improved.
