Karen Child's suggestion that we gather lineage data on all Ewings is a good one. We are trying to do that in the EFA and so far have three ways to do it.
The first pertains only to the lineages of Ewing Surname Y-DNA Project participants. We actually already have lineages on most of these and they are posted on-line. They can be reached from the Results Directory on the project website, which can be reached through the "Results Directory" link at the top right of the home page:
http://www.ewingfamilyassociation.org/DNA_Project/index_Y-DNA.htmlI get these lineages ready and post them. They are based strictly on information provided to me by project participants and I have made no effort to obtain or check references, and figure that is a project for the participants themselves and whoever wants to correspond with them.
The second is the
Ewing Genealogy Documentation Project (EGD), which has been a little slow getting off the ground. So far, we have terrific genealogies on the John Ewing of Carnashannagh and James Ewing of Inch families posted on the website. These are fully documented. EGD genealogies include all members of the family tree and are not focused on Y-DNA project participants. We really need EFA members to step forward and sponsor their own lines and then work with Bill Riddle to get them into shape for posting in the EGD.
The third is the private project of Karen Avery, the EFA genealogist. For years she has been collecting Ewing genealogies and adding them to a large data base that she maintains. Karen often fields queries, but her data is not posted on-line--she sees it very much as a work-in-progress and it is full of notes and hypotheses and is not really intended as a formal genealogy, but rather as a research aid.
So. Any Y-DNA project participant who has not submitted his Ewing lineage to me is strongly encouraged to do so. I will post it on the Y-DNA project (leaving out details about living persons, of course). Karen Avery always likes to get Ewing lineages, but she would surely choke if "everyone" sent her lineages all at once. What we really need is for EFA members to step up to the plate and get EGD genealogies ready for posting. Maybe Karen Childs would set an example for us by doing this with the descendants of her ancestor Robert Ewing b1800 in Ayrshire. My guess is that she pretty well has all the work done already and she only needs to coordinate with Bill Riddle to get it ready for posting.
