Woman banned from texting pupils

Miles bombarded the teenager with a slew of sexual text messages
A teaching assistant has been jailed for six months and banned from
sending texts to boys after admitting having sex with a special needs
pupil aged 16.
Beverley Miles, 48, from Bournemouth, Dorset, preyed on the boy at
school, at his home and at remote beauty spots.

The victim's sister raised the alarm after he confided in her, showing
her sexual text messages from Miles.

The boy had tried to break off the relationship with Miles, a married
mother of two teenagers, jurors heard.

No amount of punishment will ever compensate for the ordeal that my
son has had to endure

She and the teenager, who needed one to one teaching and was described
as "rather slow", had a relationship between 1 May and 17 June,
Bournemouth Crown Court was told.

After their relationship became public, Miles disappeared from home for
three weeks, sparking an extensive search by police.

Her husband, a painter and decorator, toured the New Forest and Isle of
Wight, putting up posters asking for help finding her.

Miles, who had been sleeping rough in the New Forest, rang home after
recognising herself on a poster.

'Breathtaking arrogance'

The special needs expert initially denied six charges, but later
changed her plea on two counts to guilty.

Judge John Beashel ordered the other four counts to lie on file.

He also disqualified her from working with children and made a sexual
offences prevention order banning her from sending text messages to any
boy under 18 who is not a relation, or living with any boy under 18 to
whom she is not related.

Mr Beashel said: "In many ways these offences demonstrate breathtaking
irresponsibility and indeed arrogance on your part in driving to his
home on at least one occasion whilst the rest of his family were out
and having sexual intercourse with him there."

The victim's mother, who cannot be named in case her son is identified,
said outside court: "No amount of punishment will ever compensate for
the ordeal that my son has had to endure and is still enduring.

"This teacher deceived me into believing that she was giving my son
extra tuition prior to his GCSE exams.

"To then discover that his trust, and mine, was significantly abused by
this teacher was devastating."
