Subject: Acne and sugar/sweetener options

My teenager has horrible acne.  He's done the Zendocrine cleanse, is taking
LLV, and using some oils.   He washes his face morning and night with the
new foaming face wash.  He was using the clear skin roll on until it got to
be too sensitive.

He's been at this for about 3 months+ with absolutely no improvement.

I have a feeling sugar may be one of the culprits.  How do I get him off
refined sugar?  What are the best substitutes?  We have agave nectar,
sucanat, stevia....

I'm thinking of starting to make a 'lemonade' for him to drink
daily...using a few slices of lemon and putting some lemon eo in it to make
it sort of a cleanse, but don't know what sweetener to use.   He will take
oils in capsules if I give them to him, but if I put any in his food/drink,
he gets upset...like the time I put some cinnamon in his oatmeal instead of
the ground junk out of the can.  He knew it was eo immediately and was not
happy. Go figure.  He's also open to me applying oils on him topically.

What to do?   I really could use some help with this one.  I can tell it is
starting to scar his face.

Thank you for all of your help,

Carly

His acne is the toxins coming out of his body.  My oldest is going through
the same thing.  Vetiver is amazing for acne as well as coconut oil.  Lime
is good at exfoliating it:)  Getting off the white sugar is definitely the
main culprit.  But the detoxing will make a major difference.  Zendocrine
oil with the capsules works well too.

I have been reading that for some people dairy is a main culprit of
acne.  Also, my dad said he had bad acne as a teen and could not eat
any chocolate.  You might research those things. Maybe you could take
him to one of those alternative health people who do muscle testing,
and see what foods are causing him trouble.  Instead of treating it
topically, maybe you need to eliminate the internal cause.  It sounds
like you are on the right track to eliminate refined sugar.  Even if
that is not the cause of his acne, you are still going to help his
body in  a really positive way.  We use agave, dates, raw honey.
Possibly the whole family needs to participate so he is not feeling so
isolated.  Good luck!  Let us know about your findings and results!

Xylitol and yacon are both good sweeteners.  Xylitol is also anti-bacterial
so could be beneficial.

Thank you all.   I had forgotten about xylitol.  Will go get some today,
along with some good lemons.  I asked him if he wanted to give it a go
giving up dairy and refined sugar...we'll see if he cares enough to do
that.    I have more control over his choices at home, but at school?
Aughghghgh!   I don't even like to imagine the junk he's putting into his
body there.  I offer to make him  lunch, but he mostly refuses that.   Kids
these days.   I remember always choosing mom's sack lunch over the *&%#
they had in the school cafeteria...and that was before pizza was an every
day choice!

I really appreciate all of your help and advice.

Oh...and as far as the whole family participating....well, he's the only
child left at home, and his dad is so stinkin' healthy it isn't funny...but
he eats all the wrong stuff...cereal(he can't go a day w/o his Wheaties),
white sugar, candy, ice cream....you name it.  He is retired from the
Navy.  Once, when getting ready for a deployment, it took him 2 trips with
his seabag full just to get his candy supply on board for the cruise.
Crazy.   I do finally have him using frankincense on his ak's to see if it
will help them go away.  Too many days in the sun surfing as a kid/teen.
I really hope this makes a difference so he can realize the value of the
wonderful oils!

Have a great weekend...and keep the great comments/info coming!  I love
this group!

Raw honey, local if you can find it. Helps with allergies as well. Honey is
the only totally natural sweetener known to man.

Good idea on the raw honey...forgot about that, too.  We do have a local
place...in fact, my sugar-addict husband has used it for the last 2 years
(he hates the taste - weird) for his allergies with great success.     I
didn't get to the health food store for xylitol, so guess I'll go grab
honey from my friend next week.   Thanks for the warning on the laxative
effect, Riki...that would be pretty bad with the lemon and alkaline water!

"xylitol"? How do you pronounce that? One of my semi-firm rules is if I
can't pronounce it I shouldn't eat it. Xylitol is supposedly derived from
natural stuff. Honey is not derived from anything. It is in the comb ready
to eat as-is. It is just there.

That's my rule too Hans.  Thankfully Xylitol is easy to pronounce! I read a
few books about it and studies before using it and feel it is not just safe
it is actually beneficial for some conditions like candida.  Definitely it
is something to be used in moderation.  Like in gum and candy for example.
Ideally we should all just lose our sweet tooth and just say no.  Having
had a kid/teenager I know that is simply not the reality of things.  They
are typically more interested in appearance than health at that age.

My philosophy is to "upgrade" whatever a person is doing now.  For example:
a person eating potato chips could switch to organic kale chips which is
not exactly a health food but certainly many times better than carcinogenic
potato chips or fries.  Once they get used to that they can take the next
step but to put a SAD eater on a super healthy diet is bound to fail
quickly.  Slower upgrades work much better in the long run.

I didn't think of honey but a raw honey face mask would likely help the boy
too.  If you can get one with propolis added it would be even better.

Yacon is great but a bit on the pricey side.  You could also experiment
with stevia. Some is downright horrid tasting but some is okay. The white
stuff is obviously processed but still better than sugar or GMO corn syrup.

I recently attended a seminar by Laura Jacobs and she stated that TruVia was okay to use.

That's my rule too Hans.  Thankfully Xylitol is easy to pronounce! I read a few books about it and studies before using it and feel it is not just safe it is actually beneficial for some conditions like candida.  Definitely it is something to be used in moderation.  Like in gum and candy for example.  Ideally we should all just lose our sweet tooth and just say no.  Having had a kid/teenager I know that is simply not the reality of things.  They are typically more interested in appearance than health at that age.

My philosophy is to "upgrade" whatever a person is doing now.  For example: a person eating potato chips could switch to organic kale chips which is not exactly a health food but certainly many times better than carcinogenic potato chips or fries.  Once they get used to that they can take the next step but to put a SAD eater on a super healthy diet is bound to fail quickly.  Slower upgrades work much better in the long run.

I didn't think of honey but a raw honey face mask would likely help the boy too.  If you can get one with propolis added it would be even better.

Yacon is great but a bit on the pricey side.  You could also experiment with stevia. Some is downright horrid tasting but some is okay. The white stuff is obviously processed but still better than sugar or GMO corn syrup.

"xylitol"? How do you pronounce that? One of my semi-firm rules is if I can't pronounce it I shouldn't eat it. Xylitol is supposedly derived from natural stuff. Honey is not derived from anything. It is in the comb ready to eat as-is. It is just there.

I love NuNaturals Stevia as well. I always try and mention them when I
talk about Stevia because I feel like I spent a fortune find one that
didn't make me want to spit out my coffee.

I have a love hate relationship with sugar. Have a real sweet tooth
but hate what it does to mind body and soul. I use Stevia but had to
try lots to find one palatable. I use and like Natvia but by the
comments it seems there might be a few good ones out there.

I was being a little sarcastic about the pronunciation of Xylitol. My point
is that if the name sounds like a chemical it is probably not good for you.
I also believe that the longer the ingredients list the less good it is for
you (this being applied to packaged food and manufactured food-like
products, not to a recipe for something you make), and if there are
"unpronouncible" ingredients so much the worse it is. Less is more! Also,
pre-packaged food tends to be more highly processed. Kind of a rule of
thumb, I am not by any means a food Nazi.

As far as sweetness for a lemon drink, I have never appreciated lemons my entire life (very sour!!!) until doTerra's lemon eo.  Now, a drop or two in water and it is sweet enough on it's own for me.  Don't have any comment as far as using that for a cleanse purpose or for keeping kids coming back for more long term.  But, a quick taste test from my kids and I got a thumbs up.
