Subject: Child holding breath
I received an email from a friend of mine asking this...

I'm wanting to see if any of them (oils) might help my daughter's
breath holding spells. Watching her pass out is no fun!

Does anyone know if any of the oils might help her 1 year old with
this?

Thanks
Melissa Byrne

Wow - I don't know but that sounds like one stubborn child. How do they
react after she does it - even though she is only 1 - I would explain to
her that doing that is not going to get her what she wants and then just
let her do it - she will stop when she see's it doesn't work.

I would need more information.
What are the reasons for her holding her breath?
Is it triggered by an allergen?
Is it an asthmatic or COPD response?
Is it emotionally rooted - stress - anger - stubbornness?

Each of these and/or additional reasons would have a different way to
work with.
If youy could give more details, we can better avoid assumptions and
look at working with the why.

I just talked to her a little more and they said it might actually be
hereditary. Doctors say that it can be caused by a heart arrythmia or
iron deficiency. They did an EKG on her on Friday and will find out
the results tomorrow. She also said It only happens when she cries and
can't catch her breath. They say it is involuntary, but it only
happens when she is super pissed!  My husband mentioned maybe anxiety.
But has anyone else heard anything like this? Do we have anything to
help with iron deficiency?

I do know it wouldn't hurt to use Balance or Lavender when she gets angry
and see if that helps.

I would put it on the bottom of her feet or the back of her neck.

I did this as a child and I have a niece who did it. I don't remember
when I stopped, but my niece stopped when she was about four, Her dad
was holding her after she woke up and asked her if her head hurt. He
then explained that holding your breath til you pass out is not good
for your body and will give you a headache. She never did it again.
When my sister asked the doctor how to help her he basically told
"never tell her no or make her mad and she won't do it". Obviously not
an real option. I haven't had any kids go to that extreme, but citrus
oils especially orange and citrus bliss have helped stop temper
tantrums.
