I'm trying to get hostnames to display in the accounting file as opposed to just the IP address.

I've tried using the dns preload address [ip address] = [hostname] bit but it seemed to make no difference, which suggests this is not what it was intended for.  Is there an expected way to accomplish this?

no, logging names instead of IP addresses isn't implemented.

You could use adnsresfilter to perform the reverse lookups, e.g.:

accounting log = "| /usr/local/bin/adnsresfilter | /usr/bin/logger"

Cheers,

Thanks, is this planned to implement at some point?

no, there are neither plans to add an option for logging names instead
of IP addresses nor for customizing the log format.

Cheers,

Marc
