John,

Thanks for sharing that, I saved them all to my hard drive.  It looks like both the 4 speed and automatic were options on the Formula S, leaving the 3 speed manual as the standard trans even on the F/S models-interesting, I wonder if any were made that way.   I also noticed that the dealer installed disc brake option was powered, I didn't know that, I thought you could get it either way.

I also noticed on the hood stripe that it ends at the hood release. I have seen many the the stripe goes down through the latch to the edge of the hood

Roger that.  My F/S stripe was factory applied and it ends under the "Plymouth" hood casting that covers the latch.

Thanks very much for sharing this.  I particularly enjoyed the pictures on page 112 showing the kids and dog riding and sleeping in the car completely unrestrained by any seat belts!  A different time...

Thanks for the interesting Guide. Does anybody know the diameter of the Formula S torsion bar?

Hey Brion,

The F/S had 0.870" T-bars in '66, I assume it was the same in '65.

Thanks Dave. I did not realize that the F/S bars were different than the regular  v8 bars, but it makes sense to run a bit bigger bar in a handling package.

Hey Brion,
Dave is correct.
In '65 the standard suspension had .85 for the 8cyl. .83 for the 6 cyl. and as he said .87 for the H.D.suspension on the F/S.

I picked up this chart somewhere, showing the different A-body torsion
bars.

I can't absolutely guarantee it's right, but it seems like it would be.

Hee!  You got that right.  I'm currently running 1.180" T-bars in my '66 Dart and 0.990"s in the '66 F/S Barracuda. But I have a set of 1.120"s leaning in the corner of the livingroom (behind the red easy chair) awaiting installation in the Barracuda.

Here's what I have listed on my tech notes page:

OD RATE APPLICATION
====== ========= ==================================
0.810" 82 Lb/In SLANT 6/DRAG RACING
0.870" 109 Lb/In SMALL BLOCK V8/STREET/DRAG RACING
0.890" 120 Lb/In BIG BLOCK/STREET/DRAG RACING
0.920" 137 Lb/In PERFORMANCE STREET
0.990" 184 Lb/In PERFORMANCE STREET/SOLO/TRACK DAY
1.040" 224 Lb/In PERFORMANCE STREET/SOLO/TRACK DAY/ROAD RACING
1.090" 270 Lb/In SOLO/TRACK DAY/ROAD RACING/OVAL TRACK
1.120" 305 Lb/In SOLO/TRACK DAY/ROAD RACING/OVAL TRACK
1.140" 323 Lb/In SOLO/HD-ROAD RACING/OVAL TRACK
1.180" 380 Lb/In SOLO/HD-ROAD RACING/OVAL TRACK
1.200" 396 Lb/In HD-SOLO/HD-ROAD RACING/HD-OVAL TRACK
1.240" 452 Lb/In HD-SOLO/HD-ROAD RACING/HD-OVAL TRACK

Rates were caclulated (other than those for the 1.14" and 0.87") in relation
to the 1.14" or 0.87" (whichever was closer on OD) on a percenatge basis.
The applications listed are my opinion based on autocrossing on the 0.870",
0.990", 1.040", 1.090", 1.140", and 1.180" bars. I'll note that Solo
(autocross) set-ups are often much stiffer (and more tail happy) than road
race or Oval set-ups because of the transition (left-right-left) intensive
nature of the courses. Also you need good shocks (NOT KYB) for any of the
T-bars beyond 0.990" to really work and ride well. What bars will work best
for you depands on what tires/wheels you use, what kind of driving you do,
your driving style, and what kind of feedback you like at the wheel and seat
of your pants.

Replying to my own post... left out one VERY important factor in T-bar
selection: total weight and front/rear percent weight.
