Here's a interesting post on FABO about factory built 1966 Barracuda's with 318ci engines. For Trans-Am racing. Where are they now?

http://www.forabodiesonly.com/mopar/showthread.php?t=189723

I remember speaking to someone at Carlisle who owned a early Barracuda with a 318ci from the factory. I frankly didn't believe him (I stand corrected!).

My 66 cudas' vin calls for a 318 but has a 273/4bbl. The fella I bought it
from claimed it was all original but sadly somewhere along the way the motor
must have been swapped out. I have returned her to the correct factory
settings for ride height, torsion bar torque and have tried to keep her
historically correct. The only mod done was the dashboard voltage mod listed
on our site and after market shocks.

Hi Folks,

Ah, the myth of the 1966 Barracuda GT. This was discussed extensively on
MOPAX some years ago. Here's the story: In late 1965 Chrysler decied to
enter the Daytona Sportscar race with the Barracuda in the GT3 category. In
order to do this they had to file homoligation paper work with the FIA,
which governs international sportscar and endurance racing. According to
Scott Harvey, Since they could, the MOPAR folks took a page out of Ferrari's
book and provided paperwork defining an model that was never actually built
(except for the one example that ran at the '66 Daytona race (finished 3rd
in class)). I have a TIF file of the FIA paperwork if anybody wants a copy.

Hi Gang! [cheery wave]

I was a student at an American High School down in Mexico City back in 66/67. The father of one of my school chums was a Chrysler factory rep and he always had cool toys!

One day, he took us for a ride in a Barracuda GT with a 318. It was an exciting run through the mountains.
So, I can say I've not only seen one, but actually ridden in one at a fair rate of speed. [grin]

Hi Steve, Stan,

If they built more than the one, and adhered to the FIA paperwork, it would have been an LA 318 built with a 273 Commando cam, 2"/1.65" valves, 10.5:1 compression, Holley 4160, and headers.  The papaerwork rates the motor at 260 HP @ 5500 and 280 FtLb @ 4000.  This is the first first-person account of the car I've heard of since I learned of the paperwork (other than the Daytona car).  Other details included a plexiglass rear window and an all-up weight (less fuel) of 2550.

Hi Dave,

Now that you mention it, I do recall his dad bragging about a Holley carb. Other than that, all I recall is a breath-taking run in the outskirts of Mexico City that ended up at the Magdalena Mixuca (Mexican Gran Prix track). He dropped us off in the pits because he said they were doing some other testing and the two kids had to grab a bus ride home.

I do remember a statement he made when we were gushing about the car. He said, "Detroit will build anything you want if you can afford it."
