It’s just dawned on me that the throttle cable and the bracket that holds it to the engine that I have probably came out of a 2 barrel car. I think the 4 barrel cable must be shorter and the bracket holds it further to the side of the engine because the carb is wider. My new engine is 4 barrel. I don’t have access to wrecking yards, that would be too easy. So if anyone has these or can get them for me from a yard and send them, I would very much appreciate it.

I recall making one from a 2bbl. I cut the cable clamp ear part off and drilled a hole in the other end and bolted it to the driver rear carb bolt. Use a nut on top of the carb nut so you don't overtorqe the carb stud trying to get it tight enough to not move when Actuating the pedal. Not restoration quality, but it works.

Yes I’m beginning to think I’m going to have to rig something up. I have 2 different cable clamps to work with but it’s the throttle cable that has me puzzled. When it’s pulled back far enough to allow full travel in the carb it’s got a wicked S curve to it and quite a lot of strain on it. That’s why I think it should be shorter. Maybe I’m wrong. Should it be like that?

Rob...does your current bracket look like this....? This is a correct '65 273 4bbl throttle bracket.

Rob. Try a local salvage yard the 70’s dodge pickup use a clamp and cable hookup that I think you will find you can use, I did it on a couple of dodge cars a 66 Dodge Dart and a 71 Dodge Charger. I’m sorry I don’t remember the exact year of dodge pickup but they were V8 trucks. Good luck. George

Darwin, this is weird. I have one just like that but it’s exactly reversed. Like a mirror image. It jogs to the inside putting the cable way too close to the carb. I need one like yours.

Rob...yours probably looks like this......?  If so, you need the 4 barrel bracket, or, McGuyver one up yourself. If you aren't worried about originality, you could use a '67-up bracket, which is easier to find. I think they're even repro'd somewhere.

Hope this helps....

I found mine, it was in my toolbox. Take it off the rear carb stud. I think I used this off a Thermoquad so it has a relief for another nubbin on the TQ by the stud hole. I think spectre makes a universal (if you own a Chevy!) throttle cable bracket that you might be able to adapt...I never noticed that bracket boss on the 273 4bbl intake but there it is.....

Yep, just as I thought, mine is 2bbl and I need 4bbl stuff. Do you know if the 4 bbl cable is different also? I think it has to be shorter. Does anyone have it?

Thanks Darwin.

Not last time I spoke with him he said I’d probably have to make one. Also check out the universal option (Daryl sent the link). Still don’t have a clear answer about the length of the cable. I guess I’ll get it clamped down first and see if it binds.

My cable is a real 65 4bl and it had a pretty good "S" to it also. I dont believe they are different than the 2bbl. I actually had to get a longer one off a Duster for my slant "upgrade" as it was too short.

Well, all I can say regarding cable length is, I used the stock 2bbl cable on my '67 273 4bbl conversion, and it works fine.

Ok, good enough. I’ll go with that then.
Thanks guys.

I used my stock 273 2 bbl cable and an altered bracket from an early eighties 360 four barrel police car. (probably hard to find in a junkyard nowadays!). I cut the kickdown part off , and used the stock ball stud and a piece of threaded rod for the stock 273 kickdown setup.
I wish I had a digital camera fpr pics. It was not hard to do and has held up well. I also used the return spring bracket from the police car.

Good luck.

I used the stock cable from my original 273 auto Barracuda, and I'm
pretty sure the stock bracket. (Or, it could be from any number of
vehicles!) I added a 90-degree hardware bracket, attaching it to the
carb mounting stud, and attaching the throttle bracket to it so that
it's 90-degrees from the way it was originally installed. Works
great! I've attached a pic...I can send more if requested.

Jim...I like that! Great idea. Sure beats looking for the elusive 4 barrel
bracket.

Actually that looks pretty good. I might do that. I was considering heating
up mine, reversing all the bends and putting the bolt through the other way.
Your way is probably easier. looks like you don't have the bolt hole on the
manifold anyway. That pic will do just fine.
Thanks,
Rob.

Rob...are you not using a stock, cast-iron Commando intake? If you're using
an aftermarket unit, it will not have the bolt hole for the stock bracket
anyway. You can use Jim's idea, or buy one of the aftermarket brackets that
fit the later engines. I like Jim's method.

I've got the Commando intake with the bolt hole alright. If I can't get the
real bracket, I think I'm going to try and re-work this 2 bbl one so it at
least looks the same. If I ruin it? move to plan "B". Plan "B"? not
developed yet, wait to see if plan "A" crashes. Nice to know there's
options. Looks like I won't have to look for the cable anyway.
