hey guys, I brought my 66 cuda home, I started it up and let it run, then it just quit and I have no inside voltage, I have power under the hood at the firewall and resistor on both sides, coil has power, ground seems fine, key switch is dead, fuse panel is dead,  thanks again, Steve from Minnesota

Steve,

Check the bulk head connector, it is the source of many electrical problems. What part of Minnesota are you in? I'm in Saint Paul, maybe I can help.

Check the bulkhead connector...specifically the large diameter wire.....this carries ALL the power to the passenger compartment, then to the rest of the car....this has always been a weak point in the A-Body electrical system.

That little box is the bulkhead connector.  Pull it apart and repair the wires and/or connections that are bad.

Clean all contacts, replace pins if necessary and then pack it with white bearing grease. It'll never oxidize under that stuff. Mopar ended up doing that in the 80's on their trucks

another day another question, I took the bulkhead apart and realized I had no power to bulkhead, battery is in the trunk, I traced the wires to starter and tested them at starter, it had bad connection at starter, problem solved, next problem, tranny pan is leaking, what trans does a 66 cuda have in it and what kind of fluid does it take? thanks Steve from rochester minnesota

Steve,

Just went through the ATF question on another Chrysler list I'm on.  The best fluid to use is type F or FA.  Avoid using any of the modern fluids to assure long term service.  Evidently they have too much detergent in them for our old torqueflites and can affect the seals and clutch packs.

I put my val back on the road in 1994, it sat still for about 12 years before that.

Had it serviced once I think – I just put more fluid in it when it starts dropping out of first (drive) when stopped and DEAD COLD just after start up. This might happen every couple of years?

Then it goes fine.

Do these things ever die?

My only complaint is that the 273 sits at about 3000rpm on the freeway doing 100hph (60mph) but it just serves to remind me that there was a time when petrol was cheep – he he

An old timer told me he ran one on castor oil once...wouldn't suprise me. But I heard dexron 3 was better than F but I don't think it matters much after 40 years. When you start up a 727, there is low fluid in the convertor so I have been told that you should start cold motor and put into N as soon as possible for pumping fluid into convertor. Let it fill maybe 15-30 seconds or until your choke starts to pull off, then drop into gear. There is a "no yo-yo" spool valve relacement you can get through Gil Younger's kit of the same name. It prevents convertor drainback with a modified spool valve. Takes about 30 minutes to install. You will need to drop the pan and valve body but it slips in easily.

I have the 1965 273 V8 with a 904 torqueflite8 (or something like that) Is it basically the same idea as the 727 but not as heavy duty?

OK, I'll need more info on this.

In the old days, TYPE F trans fluid was for FORDS ONLY.  TYPE A was for everything else.  Dexron replaced Type A.

If you used Type F fluid in a trans designed for Type A (or Dexron now) you will blow up the trans.

Anybody care to comment?

Type F has much lower burning point than Dexron, It shifts faster but it is just old fashioned. Many people use it in TF's but Dexron is  much better fluid, higher temps, and has friction modifiers that the F doesnt have, thats the reason the F fluid hits harder. Lock up convertors need the good modern stuff. F is also thinner, just use Dexron3, no need for full synthetic Dex4 or is that 5?? NOT needed...

this is correct. DO NOT SWAY from what the manufacturer suggests. they recommend a certain type of fluid for a reason. dextron is for chrysler and type f is for ford.

Just the opposite. Dexron is more slippery then type "F" . If you use Dexron in a older Ford, it would cause the trans to slip, and burn it up. Type "F" in a torqueflite would actually give you a firmer shift (slightly), but is a little harder on the internal bushings. That is what I used in my race cars, in the old days. The old B&M "Trick Shift" fluid is just type "F" fluid. I use Dexron III in all my torqueflites, now, without any problems.  I have heard of using the Mopar ATF+4, but I think it is too pricey.

Speaking of Transgo, the spool valve is in all there shift kits. Im now wanting to get one, but which kit should I go with? TF-1 or TF-2? The tech at transgo said the TF-1 is more for trucks and towing, while the TF-2 is for "hot rods", but online line it says "full race".

The TF-2 has a stiff spring and a rod that are interchangeable depending on what you want. The 2 parts are for the accumulator , the rod provides a solid actuation while the spring is a damper for the shifts. The rod hits with a 2-3 chirp of you got the beans to back it. The no yo-yo kit only had the spool valve, not sure ifs still around.

Thats correct, the F is less slippery so the clutches grab faster hence the harder shift.

Ever get a 10M Email? I have not...but if you have a bunch of pics to send , I always link them to my picasa account so I'm only sending links, much faster. Only downfall (if any) to free Gmail  is the right 20% of the screen has some text adds that curiously have something in common to the Email you are reading...thats how Google makes money. doesnt bother me, but it does scare some in the foil hats....
