   This Week's Top Stories
   =======================
   1. EU probes pharma industry over generic medicine concerns
   2. German, French energy giants hit with EU fine
   3. EU to target market failings using consumer complaints
   4. EU countries slap duties on US biodiesel
   5. Bavaria bows to EU demands over farm subsidies
   6. Economic crisis cuts number of illegal immigrants

   Publisher's Note
   ================
   With dairy product prices falling due to low demand brought
   on by the economic crisis, European farmers have protested
   for months that they need more help. On Thursday, the
   Commission decided to extend for six months a scheme under
   which producers who cannot sell their butter are given
   subventions to put it into private storage.

   Whether this will quell the protests is uncertain, however.
   The Commission's aid has been very targeted, and it refuses
   to go back on a decision to scrap milk quotas - which the
   farmers say is threatening their livelihood.
