Subject: [Synkron] New Review Journal on New Religions

[I am sending this out on multiple lists, so please accept my apologies in advance if you receive multiple copies of this announcement.]

Dear Colleague,

After some delays, the first issue of the Alternative Spirituality and Religion Review (ASRR) is finally up:

http://www.academicpublishing.org

I had originally arranged for about forty contributions, but for various reasons received only 21 reviews of individual books. Happily, I also arranged for two review essays that fill out the issue.

Though I am pleased with the result, I would have been happier if I wasn’t the editor or co-editor of three of the books being reviewed and if three of the books were not related to Satanism. In both cases, I would have preferred to have spread these across several issues, but did not do so because I was short of reviews. In any event, these emphases should balance themselves out in future issues.

This first issue is an open-source (read ‘free’) promotional issue. I will be compiling a second open-source issue that will appear before the end of 2009. The 2010 volume, which will contain four issues, will require a subscription.

If you are so inclined and have the means (I know these are tough times), please subscribe to the 2010 volume.. At the very least, please request that your institution subscribe. (International Standard Serial Number: 1946-0538).

Also, please contact me about reviewing a relevant book for the next issue! (A less-than-easy way of getting a free book.) The relatively small number of reviews in the first issue makes the journal appear a bit ‘skimpy,’ and I’d like to change that with an enlarged second issue. (Deadline for reviews: End of this November.)

Thanks!

All the Best,

Jim
