Does anyone have any comment on the speed of eureqa with an 8 core AMD
FX cpu or how this chip compares with the 4 core i7? (I currently run
WinXP, but I may switch to Ubuntu in the near future)
thx

Performance should scale linearly with the number of cores. So doubling the cores should double the search speed. I'm not familiar with the AMD chips, but I would expect them to be roughly similar to the intel counterparts.

One special consideration is the difference between "cpu cores" and "cpu threads". Some Intel chips have 4 cores that support 8 threads. In this case the performance is similar to an ordinary 4-core cpu (though still slightly better).

The operating system shouldn't have any significant impact on the performance.

Another option to get more performance is to use the cloud. The cost of a new cpu or a new system would equal A LOT of cloud time.

With AMD you should be able to gain some additional speed by
overclocking.

If you are not familiar with this approach, but would like to try I
would suggest you limit any such mod. to 5%. I have used both types
of chip and the one Michael refers to are chips that have
Hyperthreading, and they work extremely well, if you can make use of
the extra thread per core.

In general AMD give a faster return for commensurate CPU's, but this
is very muddy water and requires considerable research plus T. & E.
with O/Cing.
