As announced back in November 2011, we've deprecated some legacy features of our API related to creating and editing listings. The following things are changing:
  • The fields who_made, when_made, and is_supply will always be REQUIRED when creating listings. Previously these fields were optional.
  • The field category_id will always be REQUIRED when creating listings. The previous convention of supplying categories in the "tags" field will no longer be honored.
  • The data_version parameter will no longer be honored. The new behavior will be the same as it was previously when using "data_version=2011.11.01".
These changes will happen on June 19 2012, approximately two weeks from now.

Let us know if you've got any questions about this so we can address them as soon as possible!

Thank you!
Lacy

What impact will this have on UpdateListing calls?

Hi Lacy -

For Etsy On Sale, right now when we get a listing we look at the first tag to determine the top-level category of the item.  If I understand correctly, on June 19th the "tags" parameter will no longer include the categories as the first three tags.  I have updated our code to use the "category_path" parameter in the getListing call instead and this works just fine.

Can you please confirm that the category_path parameter will continue to be available, even after the legacy features you mention below are disabled?

Thanks,
Cameron

Hey Graeme;

Calls to updateListing have never required these fields. These fields will continue not to be required when calling updateListing. The data_version parameter has no effect on updateListing calls.

Updating a Listing's Category will require use of the category_id. Updating a listing's Marketplace Attributes will require that the listing have valid values for all these Marketplace Attributes.

Thanks for the feedback,
Lacy

Cameron;

Yes I can confirm the category_path parameter will continue to be available. This is the preferred method of extracting Category information for a Listing.

Thank you for your feedback,
Lacy

Hi Lacy,

Thanks for the update ... we will keep our eye on this just in case as API calls tend to break when changed.

On your last point,  Marketplace Attributes, you previously recognised that there was a bug and that null is a valid response for these fields that will be fixed in the next 2 to 3 months. Is this no longer the case?

Graeme
