Matt Asay at CNET writes that, in contrast to Google’s Android, Symbian has stayed more or less confined to Nokia as a handset manufacturer. Google has struck landmark deals with Motorola, Samsung, and HTC in recent months.
Research from tech firm Gartner indicates that Android is set to become the second-biggest mobile OS, passing Blackberry and iPhone, and that Symbian’s declining market share offers Google a shining opportunity to take over significant chunks of the smart phone market.
The launch of the Motorola Droid earlier this month has cemented
Google’s place as a challenger not only to Symbian for the mobile OS
market, but to Apple for the luxury smart phone market. Initial reviews
of the device have been strongly positive.
