Etherpad customization help

How can we customize the etherpad editor in PHP to add two
functionality of upload image and secondly provide table creation tools

Table and image support should make it into v1.2 as plugins.  The editor is javascript so you wouldn't edit any php.  There is a GUN IO job open for table support I think..  You can add to that if you want to move it along quicker :)
