Help on calculating the amount of contiguous cells in a raster dataset

Dear all,

I want to calculate in a raster dataset what is the connectiveness of
this raster's cells, i.e. i want to to be able to calculate the amount
of contiguous cells from the same class that appear in a row or in a
column. i want to know if they are connected of if there are other
landuses between the main landuse that i want to perform the
calculations in.
