Dear all,

I'd like to have your feedback on our next group talk scheduled
primarily on SUNDAT,MAY 31st or Saturday,JUNE 6th.

I can be available at 22:30 CET(central European Time)then.
For Mikhail,it shall be 24:30 half an hour after midnight on June 1st
or 7th.
For those in Brazil,it shall be 17:30,and for Pablo,it's 15:30.

I'd like to suggest another day and time for members in Middle East
and Asia to be Wednesday,June 3rd at 13:00 CET.

Will it be a suitable day and time for Elham and other members in
Iran,India,China or Vietnam?!
That's 15:30 Tehran time,16:30 Indian time,and 19:00 Beijing time.For
members in Vietnam, please google the time converter because I haven't
got the chance to talk to any of you yet.;)

As far as I remember, our last group talk was exactly 1 year ago!!!

Anyone interested in joining the group talk, please don't hesitate to
reply to this thread!;)

I personally don't think it's necessary to create a Skype room.I'll
invite those who would like to take part to my conference room instead
on Skype then...

Awaiting your response!

Hi Pln

Nice idea you suggested us.
I haven't joined the group talks so far, but I really would enjoy. Unfortunately, I hardly am at home or that time on weekends. I know it's hard to find a suitable time for all. I will wait for the next!! :)

Best Regards

Oshiro Anu and all,

It's not been easy for me to schedule a time for group talks...and
that's why I didn't announce the date and time earlier.:(

During the last few talks last year,I had the opportunities to talk
with Rocha,Mikhail,Ed,Dantas,Saber and Elham for about 1.5 to 2 hours
a month.

It's just a chance for me to get to know more of you through live
chat, and for you to practice speaking English if you need it.
As I'm aware of,there are so many free live chat sites for you to log
on to and have fun making friends on.

For those who don't know yet,I'm just a volunteer EFL/ESL teacher who
don't conduct any online courses.
So rest assured that I won't force you to join any classes!LOL

Oshiro, you must be going to restaurants, pubs or karaoke parlors with
your friends then!;)Am I right?LOL

Wow,Lilian is finally going to meet you in person,Anu!
Aren't you nervous, anxious or excited at all?
I bet you are!LOL
I know you'll make sure she has a wonderful time during her stay in
New Delhi!!!

Spendid day,everyone!

Hi Ed Pablo and all,

I'm extremely sorry for not calling you,Ed last night at my time!:(

I was trying to 'drag' you and Pablo into my 'new group',and had no
clue how to go about it considering the last time I did it was 1 year
ago...and I'm a complete idiot when it comes to new technology...:(

I started to call Pablo, but I talked with his adorable daughter first!
Wow,her English is better than Pablo's!!!LOL
Then I began to chat with Pablo and his wife about their dog and
parakeets...

When I realized that I was supposed to call you,you already went
offline!:(
That's really careless of me!But why didn't you call me instead?!
Did you manage to set your audio up?

I hope you'll be available on June 6th,this Saturday!Let me make up to

yeah, ha ha, i am Chinese. I think I have a skype account, but i don't use it very often, i do not have few friends on the skype. I live in a middle size city, which is called Hangzhou, it is really  close to Shanghai, and famous for its small lake- West Lake. In Marco Polo's book, Hangzhou is the most beautiful cities in the world, if u visit china, i think Hangzhou is the best try. I guess ur husband will be staying Shanghai, Guangzhou, Beijing or HK. they are the largest cities in china, and have import and export business. Many foreigners think chinese food are delicious, so it is the best time for enjoy original chinese food. I will try to be on time

Hi Pln and friends!

> > I started to call Pablo, but I talked with his adorable daughter first!
> > Wow,her English is better than Pablo's!!!LOL

My daughter enjoyed the talk a lot! She was seated on the floor, over
a shoe while talking to Pln! I gave her a small cushion after some
minutes of course ;)

Pln considers the English of my daughter is good enough for her
condition (EFL), and I agree, because I think she doesn't make things
more difficult than they really are. I mean, she uses the words she
already know, she doesn't look for unknown words in the dictionary as
I do. That's the problem, when we focus on trying to use the exact
words...

And imagine.... I tried to say to Pln that she is the only
granddaughter in my family, and I said 'nephew... no!!...
niece...no!!" I realized I haven't practiced those words!!

But the important thing is to keep trying...

Well, please perhaps you want to read this:

http://speaking24.com/tips.php

"First of all try to speak as fluent as possible..." Then the grammar
stuff...!

"They always try to use exact translation of the word they want to
use, but it causes that they often get stuck." !!

"Try to say what you have on mind in other words - practising it is a
real key to fluent English conversation!"

"Of course the best way of practice are English conversations with
other people."

"The more you practice, the more fluent your English speaking is :)

Good luck!"

You just get a person who you can talk to! Or practice with a friend
who is also learning English, close to you... Organize a club...
Teach English to your relatives... What Else?... Or as Diana says, in
the worst case scenario, talk to your dog, or your cat.. ;)

Thank you,

Pablo

Hi John and all,

You're right!Shanghai is his 1st destination in China,then Ningpuao
(?),Beijing,Gingpuao(?) and another town I can't recall the name...:(
He wanted to go to Hangzhou or Suzhou, but failed to find any cheaper
hotel rooms available there...Tough luck!;)

We had a very close senior friend who was originally from Hangzhou, but
she passed away last January.:(
I'm originally from Taiwan, but have been living in Poland with my
Polish-born husband and Taiwanese-born children for the last 2.5
years!

My husband will be like a fish in the water when he eats Chinese food!
LOL
He loves all kinds of spicy,stir-fried Chinese/Taiwanese food.As a
matter of fact,he's a dare devil when it comes to trying exotic foods!
LOL

I don't use skype or live chat on Yahoo or Google at all!I'm this old-

Hi Pablo and all,

I absolutely agree with you on the conclusion you drew about your
daughter's ongoing success in speaking English!!!

After you pointed out this bad or even fatal mistake many people make,
I myself recalled this frustrating fact while communicating with my
students:
They always try to find the exact words which are identical to their
mother tongue, then they got anxious, thus their flow of thoughts or our
conversations got stuck!;(

The golden rule of mastering a language is nothing but expressing
yourself with the simple words you have known so far!
It has worked for me since I started to learn English at the age of
13...

There are still so many words I don't know, but it doesn't bother me at
all!
John or any other Chinese will easily agree with me that it's true
even there are over 30,000 Chinese characters in the dictionary, how
many do we actually need to communicate every day with other Chinese?
There are so many Chinese characters a lot of Chinese/Taiwanese don't
even know or remember how to write them ourselves!Don't you agree with
me,John?

I admire one member among us who's also a moderator at another group
for his large English vocabulary!
Quite often,I have to look up the words he uses in the dictionary
because I hadn't known before. They are acquired only if you read a
lot...;)

One more thing, being a perfectionist like you,Pablo also hinders your
English acquisition!
Learn to loosen up like your easy-going daughter,Pablo!LOL

Cheers,
Pln

Oh,yes,John!

I forgot about the difficulty of your getting a visa as an independent

Mainland Chinese and Taiwanese governments aren't that friendly as
people like you and me,are they?LOL

Oh,well, never mind since you'll be studying in Holland this fall soon!
Where in Holland will you be studying?
My husband and I had been in and out the countries so many times a
decade ago because we had plans settling down there...
The last time when we were in 2 cities there was 2.5 years ago with
our kids.

I aslo encouraged Elham to choose Europe to study instead of USA.
Every country in Europe has its own characteristics and charm, and you
are so close to every other country by train on the weekend!
If it's fun, diversity or cultural events that you're looking
for,Europe is the place!;)

By the way, what is subject of your studies?

One more thing,my husband is going to Hangzhou tomorrow just for a
short while...then to Cixi,Ningbo and Shanghai before he returns home
to Poland...
Oh,he's flying Air France, too!:( I am very worried about his return
flight because he will stop in DE Gaule Airport before he flies back
to Warsaw...:(

yes, indeed, about a decade ago, the Communist Party want to show their kindness to Taiwanese and wish investing, make a easy visiting plan to taiwanese, but taiwan authorities still think chinese government will send  communists to the island, so it is really bad for tourists like me. These things should be  belong to the dammed politics,. lol

I will study in Eindhoven, it is a industrial city, where the center of philps is located, and a famous football club psv eindhoven.

I think europe is suit for young people, there are so many countries and places to visit and to settle. and young people are full of energy, can learn different languages easily. in this point, i think it is a little bit difficult for old people.

I will study computer there, basicly focus on software.

Hangzhou is really hot right now, you should tell him to watch the music fountain on the west lake in the dark, it is a new site, but interesting

Hi John Charles and all again,

How old are you,John? If you don't mind telling us here...;)

Mind you that Dutch people are rather wary of foreigners who
understand their language too well!LOL
How did I know it?
Because we bought a book in a small town there and it's called "The
Undutchable"!LOL
It's a book worth reading since you're going to study there.
It's all about Dutch people's mentality and behaviours...something you
can say about their unspeakable secrets;) or some sort...LOL

I only knew Eindhoven while passing through by train several
times,that's all!
English is very common in Western Europe as people there, especially in
Holland,Belgium,Switzerland or Luxemburg are multilingual.

I don't think my husband will have interest in going especially to see
the music fountain in Hangzhou at night.
We are alternative travellers which means quite different from
ordinary tourists...LOL

He'd been suffering from a terrible jet lag and without doubt, after he
got used to it,he'll have to adjust to another jet lag back home!LOL

It's interesting that you think Europe is suitable for young people.A
lot of Taiwanese or American I know told me it's a too old continent
where everything you see is just ancient architecture or museums!LOL

Anyhow,Great weekend again to us all!

it is ok, i am 20.

I think it is really necessary have a good command of native language if i want to find a job there. but well, i can pretend have no idea about dutch. i will keep the book in my mind, hehe, undutchable.

i think the best way to know people's mind and culture is learning their language.

well, in my opinion, old continent with old cities have a lot of fun, we can image we had been through the history stories. I dont think the new cities with skyscrapers attract me. I think the only reason I want to live a big new city is high salary.

I think young people should have some special dreams, like work in NGO, travelling around the world and ect. and work for living is a middle aged man's thinking.

Hi John Charles and all,

Oh,boy,Charles!LOL
You sound just like another curious cat to me counting how many 'LOL'
in my previous post,aren't you?;)

It's just coincidental,of course!
But after reading your mischievious message dated Saturday,June 6th,I
recalled that there were 3 sixes in the calendar!!!
According to Western superstition,3 sixes is a symbol of Satan or
something like that,isn't it?!:(
And what's interesting is that 6 is a lucky number for Chinese, isn't
it?

OK.I've used 3 tag questions so far...Is it a bad sign again?!LOL

And John, you sound quite different from other young Chinese or
Taiwanese I've known.
You have more in common with me sharing the same attitude or view
towards life,work and Europe.;)

Very true!In order to experience everything abroad first hand, one has
to comprehend the local language as to interact with the locals as
well!
I've never travelled to any places with groups of tourists organised
by travel agencies.
What kind of adventures can one have if it's second-hand?!
Doesn't anyone agree with me?;)

By the way,Pablo,I haven't got time to watch the talk you mentioned

I'll do it hopefully tomorrow and let you know what I think!

Hi Pln, Charles, John, Josney and all!!

I've been reading all these messages about traveling and studing in Europe. Indeed Europe fascinates me a lot.
I've just scheduled my first trip to Europe (and I hope this is the first of many others in the future). I'm very excited and I have to start doing my itinerary!! Can you help me giving tips what places I should visit? As soon I know some of you in the group have already been in Europe.

I'm going to Paris and Brussels with my girlfriend. This is not a long trip, just one week!

Pln, I agree with what you said about traveling as a backpacker!! I prefer traveling without a prepared itinerary by travel agencies, since I prepared my route in advance.

In my opinion, I see Europe as an old and beautiful World, where many important facts happened there and because of this, there are many historical places to go.

Nice day for you all

One week to pay visits to 2-3 cities is quite a busy schedule.I've
never been to Paris, but Brussels is a place I highly recommend!;)
Try as many different beers as possible. My favourite is the cherry
one!

Barcelona is another place I'd like to revisit! If you could,I'd

Too short time left for me to write more...
I'll come back next Monday to catch up with you guys again!

authority figure when it comes to beverages, not that King of Pop who
just passed away)

Let me quote some parts for the curious Oshiro(if you were named
George,it would sound even betterLOL):
'A beer made with fruit sounds like a contradiction.
Surely is it a wine?
The explanation is that these are beers, produced from grain, with fruit
added as a further fermentable material or flavouring.
They are traditional in Belgium, where they are often based on lambic
beers, and usually made with cherries or raspberries.
Inspired by the success of these products in recent years, other fruits
and more countries have made an entrance.

The best of Belgium's artisan-made,lambic-based,whole-fruit cherry
kriek and raspberry frambozen beers have a complexity and delicacy, and
are dry.
They are the beer world's elegant response to pink champagne, and make
a pretty, unusual and appetizing drink with which to welcome guests at
a barbecue or summer party...'

Just check out the beer menus when you go to any pubs there. There are
over 365 kinds of beers to choose from!
I remember my husband couldn't even resist on trying them during
breakfast considering so short time for so many beers!LOL

As for the ales you're fond of,you can also try out Belgian ale there.
Belgians call ales 'speciales belges' or just 'belges',particularly in
the French-speaking regions of Belgium.
According to M.J.,try 'Vieux Temps'(it means Old Time),Horse
Ale,Lamot,Op-Ale and Palm.

On second thought, you should take your girlfriend to Paris because it
seems to be every woman's dream destination, and it's a bigger contrast
to your culture or Barcelona, isn't it?

When are your coming to Europe?;)

Nice day,everyone!

Hi Pln, the beer advicer!!! LOL

Fortunately you gave me some very good information about this Michael Jackson's beer companion. I actually didn't know there was another famous king :)

These fruited-beers sounds to me as being a little sweet, am I right? I surely will taste many kinds of beverage there, it doens't mean I'm going to be drunk, maybe a little high :)
Here in Brazil I believe we don't have well known ale beers, the most commom one here is pilsen and we drink always very cold. I heard in some countries in Europe they drink them in environmental temperature.

I and my girlfriend are going togheter to Paris and Brussels, and we going to Europe in the end of October. We've been planning our itinerary and our great challenge is going to be the low temperature of this season, provided that we are not used to it.
You have a point, Paris must be the dream destination of women, very different from our culture.

Thanks for the tips!

Have a nice day

Hi Oshiro and all,

Hey,why do I like this title more?LOL

In order to measure up with that title,I googled a little 'Belgian
beer' and found some brands I was familiar with:

http://www.beer-pages.com/stories/belgian-beer-guide.htm

I was wrong yesterday because in one of my books, one wine connaisseuse
said there were over 500 kinds of Belgian beers!

On one label of a brand, you will see a pink elephant.
According to the author,if one should get that drunk,he/she will see a
pink elephant!
I haven't experienced it yet.
I guess we'll wait for you to tell us after your return!LOL

Do some Europeans drink beer in room temperature?
I didn't know it.Most of the Europeans I know drink cold beer from the
fridge(without ice cubes).

How cold can it be in Sao Paolo in your winter/our summer?
It's autumn at the end of October, and it shouldn't be that cold yet
provided everywhere you go in Europe then, there are radiators/heaters
on indoors.
All you need is prabably a thick long coat,a scarf,a pair of gloves
and a pair of warmer boots. If it snows earlier this year, then you'll
need to pack more clothes...
We'll see then.

By the way,Charles,I read your today's message.
If I don't have enough time to reply to you today,I'll do it
tomorrow.;)

Nice day,everyone!

Hi Pln and all!!!

Beer with a pink elephant in the label

I found the beer with the pink elephant in the label LOL
Its name is "Delirium", it's suitable with what they say about seeing pink elephants after drinking that LOL. I have to confess that I got really excited about taste it and maybe see pink elephants!!! I'll do my best to find that brand of beer there and then I'll tell you what I saw LOL

It's good to know that Europeans drink cold beer instead of in room temperature.
Well, in Sao Paulo we don't have neither intense cold nor really intense heat. We just entered in the winter season here and the average temperature is about 10ºC when it's much cold. In the summer, the average is 30º, sometimes a little more.

Have a good day!!

I remember last end of October in Europe was at the temperaure of 10
to 15 degrees Celsius...
For Europeans it's rather warm, but for me the best is around 20!LOL

Good morning Pln and all!!!!

Good point Pln, I'm going to look for some French useful phrases, mainly greetings that may be important and I can be more polite if I am able to greet them in their language.

New idiom: "Talk shop" :)

I'm glad you enjoy the pink elephant LOL

Great weekend for all of you!!

Hi Claire and all!!!

Thank you for the links, they are really helpful. Unfortunately I hadn't seen the news about the new Google's tool. Google city tour is really great to help us plan itinerary trips. As soon as possible I'll check out the basic vocabulary of French, BBC has a huge range of resources to help students regarding culture and languages.

Through the event links you sent me, I could check there will be a concert of Eros Ramazzotti at the time I will be there, in Brussels. As a matter of fact, my knowledge about him is almost nothing. LOL

By the way, as we are talking about google services, Google street view is going to scan some streets here in Sao Paulo. Some concerns about privacity are coming up. The same as the ones there have been in other countries that Google has scanned. Besides, my opinion is that they provide us interesting and helping information about the world. Some use them for the bad, other for good.

Have a good Monday you all!!

Hi Oshiro and all,

Oh my goodness, how lucky Parisians are!!!

They have so many concerts to go to:
Leonard Cohen!
U2!
Green Day!
Pete Doherty!
Pixies
Arctic Monkeys!:(

I like Eros Ramazzotti for his voice and music.
I don't know much about him,either!LOL

I know what you meant by pointing out the dilemma of all citizens
nowadays...
Which is more important, privacy or security?:(
As a tourist, you benefit from this service whereas as a resident, you
suffer from it.
I wish there would be a win-win solution to this controversy!

Good day to us all!

Hi Claire and all here,

Yeah, you have a point, indeed, Parisians are really lucky!!

From these list of bands you mentioned, I enjoy almost all of them: U2, Green Day, Pixies, Artic Monkeys. In this point, Latin America has a lack of big concerts if compared to USA and Europe. I think it's because South America has minor importance in their marketing scheme. When these bands come to Brazil, the prices are high and even though the high prices, we crowd the stadiums and clubs where they play. They shoud come more often here.

Regarding the service Google offer us and the dilemma between security or privacy, I believe it's hard to cope with that. The internet came to blow our covers. :)

Have a nice day you all
Oshiro
