Need advice

Last week we rescued an yr old Eskie from the city pound in Philadelphia, Pa. Rudy is a friendly guy with hand chewing issues. He also likes to jump on my 13 yr old Eskie Joey and nips at his legs. Rudy will even jump on Joeys back when he is peeing. I know he is just trying to get Joey to play but I need to nip this in the bud. Any one have some advice for me ?

I think it's also dominate behavior, to try to see who's who in the new pack. At least Rudy's jumping on Joey's back sounds like it to me. I would interrupt and stop that behavior. Others more experienced will have more to offer than me. Observe how Joey is responding and handling the new arrival. If it appears Joey could use your help to teach Rudy some manners and respect, I suggest you step in. Rudy probably needs some guidance on boundaries and what's expected and allowed.

Invitation to play is usually easy to spot with a play bow, pawing, a bark or growl. You may have a mix of play ad dominate behavior going on. Be sure to look out that Joey isn't getting picked on. Let Rudy know what is acceptable and is not. A container of coins or water spray bottle can help interrupt behavior you want to discourage. Also vocal, as in hey, or uh-uh!

I agree.  I was going to say toy squirt gun or a short, loud "HEH!" so that's right in line with Cindy  :-)

Thanks for the good advice. This boy just wants to play and the wise old man gets tired of it and shows his teeth when it gets too much. I'll start looking for a spray bottle and the can pennies sounds good too.

I would separate them at times so the "wise old man"  gets some peace. The youngun' could probably use more play time with a human and walk time while the older Eskie gets some rest breaks :).
