Robert, I don't know how it is near you but I'm assuming the pound is your only option down there? If there were a no-kill shelter or rescue near you that could take her I'm assuming you would know about that already having been involved with rescue yourself. If I'm wrong I apologize. That's the first thing I would look for and then after that, take her picture and post it here and other groups.
Can you put her up on Facebook?
Any chance she wasn't dumped but lost and her people are looking for her? She sounds like someone trained her pretty well.
You could make up a flyer or put her on Craigslist of course you have to be careful and get a vet reference or some type of assurance she's going to a responsible owner.
Sorry I wish I could offer more than that. Bless you for taking her home and getting her fed.
Good Luck! Let us know please :-)

Hi Robert,
Little girl is adorable! She looks like a purebred red heeler or maybe a mix of that and something else small.
I'm sorry for suggesting craiglist, I got my Eskies Princess off there from some nasty people collecting dogs and selling them. I reported to MSPCA and they got busted and 12 dogs seized. There are trustworthy people rehoming and adopting but it is risky.
Here is a link to a cattle dog rescue in Arizona, I know that's too far but they have links to rescue all over the country and I don't know which is closest to you so ill just let you look at the page. There is North Carolina and Tennessee on there so maybe if that's closer they might help or be able to direct you to someone.
