This is a mailing list. :-)

As far as I know the 2012 edition of ESA SoCIS has not been announced
yet. Last year it was near the end of June so you'll have to wait a
bit. I guess it will be announced on this mailing list sooner or
later.

First, since it hasn't been announced we don't know if it will occur this year or exactly when so there is no information available for SOCIS 2012 yet.

Second, you apply to work with a specific project, not SOCIS. You need to find a project you are interested in working with and see if they intend to participate this year. Contact that project's leaders (they should have their own mailing list) if you want to get started early. Since there was a broad range of projects participating last year I suspect it will be no different this year. Decide what sort of project and task you'd be interested in...last year's mentor list would be a good starting point.  http://sophia.estec.esa.int/socis2011/?q=node/13   There are compression and encoding projects, visualization tools, algorithm libraries, even an operating system and a mission control tool.
