The idea behind the Winter Marathon (as Courtney put it on) was that
there was a 10k, 2 5Ms and a 10M - for a total of 26.2 miles. The
combined times were the participant's "marathon" time, and tended to
be a good predictor of the runner's actual Marathon time for the prior
or following year. (It was close for me, even, in 2002).

So an Erie Count Winter Marathon (or half marathon) would be along the
same lines. It's for the more dedicated runners, willing to be out in
the cold for a good bit of time. I'm thinking I'd get in touch with
some of the county schools and maybe coordinate with other weekend
events so we could at least get some bathrooms, or maybe some fire
halls. It's nothing but thoughts right now, and I want thoughts from
area runners who might be interested.

First (ideally) would be December 27th (a Sunday), and then Jan & Feb
to get them out of the way.

RACE - Run Across County of Erie - good idea, but not the kind of
event I can put on. I'm shooting for the standard 5-10 mile races.
Endurance events are more restrictive, and I'm looking at reaching out
to as many local runners as I can. (For the endurance folks, I can
always do a distance festival event...)

I think a Winter Marathon is a great idea.  I like the winter events and would love to have more cold weather races.

I think it's a great idea. I have learned over the last couple years that
even though I love the summer heat, my body does not care for running in
the heat & much prefers the cold temps.
It's hard to find 5 or 10miler races, so this would be a nice change to the
standard 5k & 10k.

I would love a winter Marathon in Erie, the last 2 years I have
traveled to Pittsburgh for the spring thaw which is a 10/15/20 mile
race, thats held the end of February, but if we have some longer races
in Erie I would definitly be up for them, count me in.

Any chance you could just do the full 26.2 at once? There aren't any
marathons within a thousand miles of Erie the weekend before Christmas
or the first weekend in January. If you could get the word out
quickly, you might actually get a descent turn out since a lot of
people like the cold weather.

We are trying to pull a "fun run" together for the week before Christmas that is our annual RACE (Run Across County of Erie.

It is fun but long and slow.

Once I get the date nailed I will adise the group.
