The ARTS Council of the Southern Finger Lakes (The ARTS Council) will be moving to 79 West Market Street, in the historic Hawkes Building, in mid-July. The ARTS Council, founded in 1972, has been located at 32 West Market Street in Corning since early 2002. A storefront gallery there shows and sells the work of regional artists of many disciplines (painting, photography, sculpture, ceramic, glass, video, literature and music) at all stages of their careers. The ARTS Council also serves individual artists, arts and cultural organizations and the public through access to grants, capacity-building assistance, education and training, promotional services, a vibrant folk arts program, and a web-based community arts calendar. The organization serves Chemung, Schuyler, Steuben and Tioga counties, and works with artists and organizations statewide. Full information on programs, services and grants can be found at www.eARTS.org. "32 West Market Street has been a terrific location for The ARTS Council, but we've outgrown it," said Ginnie Lupi, executive director. "More and more artists are joining us to show and sell their work in our gallery, and our programs - grants, folk arts, and artist and organizational services - are in great demand. The new location in the Hawkes Building will provide more professional gallery and program space, and will allow us to provide more services to the community." From 1890 to 1962, The Hawkes Building was the location of T.G. Hawkes & Company, a premier glass cutting factory. Current residents include Vitrix Hot Glass Studio and Michael Orr + Associates, a graphic design firm. Michael Orr owns the building. 79 West Market Street, the specific part of the building The ARTS Council will occupy, has previously housed hot glass studios and other arts-related businesses. "We look forward to serving artists, arts organizations and the community from a building with such a strong arts history," Lupi said. "We've signed a ten-year lease and can't wait to get started." The ARTS Council's new gallery at 79 West Market Street will open in mid- to late August and a public open house will be held on Thursday, September 12 from 5 - 8 pm.
