Youth Artwork Exhibition on Market Street

Gryphon by Jemi Ong

Children's artwork will be on display at 10 East Market Street in Corning in celebration of National Arts and Humanities Month.  Sponsored by The ARTS Council of the Southern Finger Lakes, the Southeast Steuben County Library hosted a National Arts and Humanities Month Youth Art Exhibition during October. The exhibition was judged by local gallery representatives, including Jesse Gardner from West End Gallery, Kathrine Page from Spencer Hill Gallery and The ARTS Council staff. The twelve winning pieces of 2D and 3D art will be on view at 10 East Market Street through Friday, December 7.

Call to Artists: in/equality

Sponsored by 171 Cedar Arts Center
Deadline - Friday, December 7

In his famous "I Have a Dream" speech in 1963, Martin Luther King, Jr. said:

"I  have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the  true meaning of its creed: 'We hold these truths to be self-evident:  that all men are created equal.'"

Fifty years after this famous  speech, the United States continues to grapple with issues of  in/equality relating to race and ethnic background, gender, sexual  identity, age, religion, physical and mental ability, education,  profession, body size, and more.  As a nation, we are not united on what  constitutes equality, much less how to achieve it.

This exhibit  will feature artwork that examines these issues from a variety of  perspectives.  New York State-based artists are invited to submit work  that speaks to a specific equality issue, or contributes to the wider  discussion of the meaning of equality in today's world.  2D, 3D,  Video/Film/New Media/Interactive, and Installation work are eligible.  Please click HERE for application guidelines.

There is no fee to enter.

Entries must be received no later than 5pm Friday, December 7.

For application information, please click HERE.

Brenna Baker
Artist member Brenna Baker has a glass light installation at the Gaffer Grille and Tap Room in Corning that was installed during the restaurant's renovation in celebration of its ten years as a successful business.  The hand blown glass lights are permanently on display to function as the main source of light for diners in the restaurant.  For more information, please click HERE.

Diane Janowski & Denny Smith
Street Fashion Project is the title of the current exhibition at the Main Street Café in Elmira. Over the summer, photographers Diane Janowski and Denny Smith set up a portable photographic "studio" to document any persons willing to stand for a brief pose. A dozen of these unique photographs will be on display through January 11, 2013 at the popular downtown restaurant.  The Street Fashion Project combines cultural anthropology, art performance, and exhibition. The photos were made at outdoor art shows, the Chemung County Fair and at Wisner Market. The photographs can also be enjoyed on a blog.  For more information, please click HERE.
This project is made possible, in part, with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts' Decentralization Program, administered locally by The ARTS Council of the Southern Finger Lakes.

Michael J. Lowe
Handwerker Gallery of Ithaca presents It Is What It Is by artist member Michael J. Lowe and Phase Of The Devout by Austin Ballard. Lowe will give an Artist Talk this Thursday, November 15 at 6pm.  Both exhibits will be on view through December 14.  For more information, please click HERE.

Kay Thomas

AND ONE MORE THING I Brake for Squirrels and Other Thoughts I Have No Doubt About is a collection of twenty-four short essays taking you on a journey where you will pause to reflect on the little things in life that you have no doubt about whatsoever.  Artist member Kay Thomas writes on experiences that fit all ages, from the art of social networking, to gently reminding adult children to take back their stuff stored at home.  You can find her social commentary column, ...AND ONE MORE THING, in the Livingston County News.  To purchase a book click HERE.  AND ONE MORE THING will be on amazon.com in mid-November.

Marcia Tinker
Local artist and history buff, Marcia Tinker, is in the process of compiling Horseheads historic photographs and facts for her spring 2013 project, Arcadia Publishing Images of America - Horseheads.  Arcadia Publishing is the leading publisher of local and regional history in the United States, with over 6,500 Arcadia titles in print. Marcia is working closely with local historians and the archives of the Horseheads Historical Society. Marcia is looking for additional photographs and historic material and would appreciate assistance from all who have photos and facts to contribute. She would especially like brick yard and early images. Do you have any material on old Horseheads? Please call Marcia at 739-9610 or click HERE for more information.
