Disruptions caused by the ongoing pandemic to health systems around the world have decreased since August 2020, but a significant number of countries are still experiencing interruptions in essential services including routine immunizations, family planning and care for dental emergencies, mental health and cancer, the World Health Organization says. The pandemic is also putting pressure on vaccine manufacturing and syringe production, reports UNICEF COVAX supply coordinator Gian Gandhi.

The pandemic has highlighted how connected the global community is, and multilateral solutions are needed to address issues such as climate change, weapons proliferation and regulation of new technologies, said United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in a message marking the International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace. "Let's unite our resources, technologies, knowledge and experiences to build peace, to build back better and to make 'no one is safe until everyone is safe' a reality and a fact of life," said UN Economic and Social Council President Munir Akram, echoing the UN chief's sentiments.

President Emmanuel Macron of France last week announced his country would donate 500,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccines to the World Health Organization's COVAX initiative, making it the first country to contribute vaccines to the project. WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has urged global cooperation and vaccine equity as new variants of the virus emerge.

Reducing methane emissions may be more important than previously believed in the fight against climate change, a United Nations study reportedly concludes. The fossil fuel industry has the greatest potential to cut methane emissions, an important step toward limiting global warming, a report from the Climate and Clean Air Coalition and the United Nations Environmental Programme is expected to say.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will hold meetings this week with Greek and Turkish Cypriot leaders as well as authorities from Turkey, Greece and the UK in an effort to convene formal negotiations between the country's rival factions. UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric has urged Turkish and Greek Cypriot leaders to "come with creativity" to the talks.
