кремля города Юрьева-Польского Владимирской области России;
2.
To: ICOMOS UNESCO International Council on Monuments and
Sites
We, citizens of the Russian Federation, citizens of the world,
demand:
1. Inclusion of St. George’s Cathedral in the lists of world
heritage sites as part of the Kremlin of the city of Yuryev-Polsky,
Vladimir region of Russia;
2. Conducting an international examination of the decisions of
the Restoration Project, carried out by the Central Scientific
Restoration Design Workshops in 2019-2021, and suspension of the
restoration works on this object.
In the Vladimir region there is a small town Yuryev-Polsky;
Polsky — because it is the center of ancient Opolye, and Yuryev —
because it was founded in 1152 by Prince Yuri Dolgorukiy. This is
one of the oldest towns in Russia.
The main advantage of the town is that an absolutely unique
monument has been preserved on the territory of its Kremlin — the
white-stone St. George Cathedral of the 13th century. This is one of
the treasures of Russian culture, which, along with the "Trinity" of
Andrei Rublev and St. Basil Cathedral in Moscow, is one of the main
symbols of Russia. Its importance has always been great. The
cathedral is absolutely unique in its artistic merit: thematic and
decorative carvings on white stone cover its walls from the base to
the dome. It is a pearl not only of Russian, but also of world
architecture and monumental art. There is no second such.
The technical condition of the cathedral is very poor.
Deformations occur, caused by changes in the base of the
foundations, the walls are wet to a height of two meters, caused by
the capillary rise of saline waters, destroying the white stone and
carving together with the frost. The humidity inside the building is
one hundred percent: the floors are wet and the steam is generated
from breathing.
The restoration work carried out in 2008 and then 2015 did not
improve the situation, but rather only caused harm. Now, in
2019-2021, a project has been developed for revising the old
restoration project on the previous principles (the project of the
Central Scientific Restoration Production Workshops, director S.B.
Kulikov, chief architect I.V.Kalugina, author-architect D.E.
Yakovlev; tender for a project, assignment for design and acceptance
of works — by the Ministry of Culture of the Russian
Federation).
This project is executed at an extremely low level and contains
solutions that can catastrophically accelerate the destructive
processes at the monument — in a few years, Russia may lose its
priceless relic forever. The project does not solve the problem of
soaking and destruction of the walls of the cathedral from
groundwater, from flooding of the foundations. The project proposes
to heat the cathedral, which has never been heated for eight hundred
years. The project proposes to grout the lost fragments of the
carving with mortar, which will violate the authenticity of the
monument. Leading qualified architects-restorers, engineers,
archaeologists, and historians of architecture made comments on the
project on the Acts of its state historical and cultural expertise,
but they were not taken into account, and the final design
documentation was never fully published and provided for review and
criticism.
The signatories demand that the St. George Cathedral be included
in the World Heritage List, given its high quality, and require an
international examination of restoration design
solutions.
