Migrants play a central role in society, and countries should ensure pandemic recovery plans include and support them regardless of their legal status, said United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in an address marking International Migrants Day. Travel restrictions and border closures prompted by the pandemic have stranded approximately three million migrants around the world, many of whom have also lost employment, says International Organization for Migration Director-General Antonio Vitorino.

Authorities in China are working in cooperation with the World Health Organization and are prepared to welcome a WHO team tasked with investigating the original source of the coronavirus next month, says WHO regional emergencies director for the Western Pacific Babatunde Olowokure. China has previously rejected suggestions of an international probe as discriminatory.

Several wealthy countries have stockpiled more doses of coronavirus vaccine than required to vaccinate their entire population while developing countries remain unable to access vaccines and the World Health Organization's COVAX initiative faces a funding shortage, warns United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. Regional authorities in South Sudan are seeking a federal ban on child marriage, warning the practice has increased dramatically as families face poverty amid the pandemic. More than half of South Sudanese girls are married before the age of 18 and approximately one in three becomes pregnant before they are 15.

Climate and Energy
Construction and construction-related industries were responsible for a record 10 gigatons of carbon emissions in 2019 -- more than a third of the world's energy-related emissions, according to the United Nations-backed 2020 Global Status Report for Building and Construction. "In the buildings sector, for every $1 spent on energy efficiency, $37 is spent on conventional construction approaches," says UN Environment Programme official Martina Otto.

Peacekeeping and Security
The United Nations has allocated $35.6 million to supply thousands of people facing aid shortages due to conflict in Ethiopia's Tigray region with water, shelter and vital supplies. The money will be divided between internally displaced groups in Ethiopia and refugees who fled the violence into Sudan.
