Empowering NATO to Counter
Authoritarian Mis- and Disinformation
NATO
and its members are facing a growing threat in the
form of Mis-, Dis-, and Mal- information (MDM)
campaigns that can be traced back to authoritarian
regimes and their proxies. Much of this
“weaponized” information seems aimed at weakening
confidence in member governments and in the
Alliance itself. While Russia poses the most
immediate threat, China and others are also
engaged in these antidemocratic campaigns.
The
McCain Institute for International Leadership at
Arizona State University has harnessed both its
international network and an Intelligence
Dashboard to analyze and map out public awareness
of disinformation threats, and then project
actionable findings and policy recommendations
throughout the period of
performance. | |
NATO Dashboard:
How often NATO is mentioned alongside Russia,
China, or MDM?
The
McCain Institute has created an interactive
dashboard displaying unique data on public
perception of NATO and mis- and
disinformation. The dashboard analyzes
millions of sources (Twitter, Facebook, blogs,
news sites and other social media) to measure the
volume and trend of the conversations around
NATO.
