Meeting
Within the WMTR Program
The fifth
meeting of the Stakeholder Consultative Group (SCG) was organized
in
Courtyard Marriot on December 15, 2016. Various stakeholders of the waste
management sector attended the meeting, including representatives of the
Solid Waste Management Company of Georgia (SWMCG), the Ministry of
Environment and Natural Resources Protection (MoENRP), Environmental
Protection Division of Adjara, Batumi and Telavi City Halls and Telavi
Municipality, as well as representatives of international organizations and
NGOs.
The WMTR team made a presentation on the implemented
activities and
documents developed in the period of June-November 2016,
including the
Municipal Waste Management Plans developed for seven
municipalities of the
targeted regions. Within the scope of the plans, the
Program is actively
collaborating with the Ministry of Environment and
Natural Resources
Protection. Additionally, waste tariff methodology and
calculated fees for
target municipalities was discussed at the meeting. The
Program also
presented Adjara A.R. Roadmap for 2017-2023 which is currently
discussed
with Adjara’s government.
In addition, the WMTR
team presented market research of waste management
sector, which included
the recycling potential of glass, plastic, aluminium
and paper.
At
the end of the event, the team also talked about the applications based
on
modern technologies developed by the program, which aim to raise the
awareness of the waste management sector – Green Watch app, e-game and an
environmental portal.
The meeting was interactive in nature,
and the attendees actively
participated in the discussion and Q&A
sessions.
Waste Management Technologies in Regions (WMTR) was
launched on March 18,
2014. The initiative is funded by the U.S. Agency for
International
Development (USAID) and implemented by the International
City/County
Management Association (ICMA), together with CENN– a local
partner and a
sub-recipient.
WMTR is assisting the Government
of Georgia in designing an adequate waste
management system in the regions
of Adjara and Kakheti. The program
objective is to support a cleaner and
healthier environment, minimize
adverse impacts from waste on human health
and natural resources, and reduce
greenhouse gas emissions from
landfills.
