Scientists have been warning for
decades about the dangers of pesticide use — and
now the damage has become only too obvious. In
agricultural areas of Iowa, a U.S. state known for its
vast farming industry, cancer is now
"everywhere."
The American Cancer Society is
calling this a cancer "crisis." Out of all U.S. states,
Iowa's rate of cancer has been the second-highest for
the last few years — and its rates are
increasing.
Authorities are trying to
blame alcohol consumption, but residents are tracing
their increasing rates of cancer to the use of
pesticides, including glyphosate or RoundUp by Monsanto,
on farms all over the state. When these poisons are
sprayed over crops, they go into the air, onto our food,
and seep into the local water supply, harming local
children and adults alike.
The World
Health Organization classified glyphosate, a
weed-killer, as probably carcinogenic back in 2015 —
10 years ago. Research has tied the use of
many pesticides to a whole variety of illnesses and
diseases, obviously including cancer, but not limited to
this.
Most farming organizations are refusing to
consider how their industry could be poisoning an entire
state's worth of people. But we cannot abandon people
who live in rural, country areas to this explosion of
cancer just because corporate interests want us to look
the other way.
