What a year this has been. A lot of what we think is “normal” has been
challenged by the pandemic. Our trust has been shaken, our values have been
reviewed, we have grieved for our friends and families.
And yet, during this past year, we have managed to regroup and
act. From building a coalition demanding a Just Recovery and standing
with movements seeking racial justice, to stopping fossil fuel projects and
passing climate-friendly legislation, our movement around the globe is
as strong as ever.
Watch
where we are at with our inspiring movement here:

Vladimir, here are some inspiring highlights from around the world:
- People in Europe put banks funding fossil fuels
in the spotlight, and a call for green recovery on the table. European
institutions cut their ties with the fossil fuel industry and their
supporters, and reviewed sponsorship programs.
- Indigenous led, people powered
movement stopped the largest tar sands mine in
Canada's history.
- Public finance institutions in South Africa
withdrew its support for the Thabametsi coal plant project and it
got cancelled.
- Judges ruled out coal extraction
from a pit near indigenous land in Brazil.
- A bank in New Zealand cut its ties with
coal, oil, and gas companies and became Fossil Free — even refusing
to take fossil fuel companies on as customers!
- People all over the world pushed a big
Japanese coal lender bank out of a United Nations’ fund meant to
support developing countries in addressing climate change impacts.
- We joined forces with Climate
Strikers and supported and empowered youth activists groups all over
the world,
- And just last week, we saw the result of 8 years
campaigning in collaboration with people-led groups and coalitions:
the biggest pension fund in the world, New York State’s $225 billion fund,
committed to a broad climate action plan including fossil fuel
divestment.
2020 has shown us that when we stand together, we are powerful. And
we’re all geared up for 2021.
Next year, the global 350.org community is doubling down on our goal to end
fossil finance. No money to fossil fuels means no new dirty projects, less
pollution, and a real chance to prevent further climate disasters. It also means
a real opportunity to do things differently and invest instead in a liveable
future, and a just recovery from the pandemic.
As
these plans take shape, let’s celebrate people’s resilience and victories
throughout 2020. Watch and share the video.
May the year ahead be full of more victories, for each and all of us, and for
the planet.
