Focus of the conference:

One in three Europeans living in cities today endure air quality deemed illegal under EU air quality standards. What is more, an alarming 90% of Europeans living in cities are exposed to levels of air pollutants deemed damaging to health, according to the World Health Organisation’s more stringent guidelines. This has significant financial and economic implications, in terms of increased expenditures on hospital charges, public health spending, reduced labour productivity and pre-mature deaths. Construction machinery is responsible for a large amount of CO2, NOx and PM emissions. A recent Bellona report found that approximately 25% of Oslo’s total emissions come from construction sites, which also emit more CO2 than the entirety of the city’s car fleet, with the addition of 5.1 tons of NOx. In recognition of these vast, climate, environmental, and human health implications, Norway has placed ‘zero-emission construction sites’ high on its agenda in recent months, and a number of public builders are already investing in and demanding emission-free construction sites.

EU Green Week 2018 offers the unique opportunity to kick-start this important discussion at the EU level.

This official EU Green Week partner event takes a closer look at the role of public authorities in tackling the air pollution-induced human health crisis through stimulating the uptake of zero-emission construction sites. Government expenditure on works, goods and services represents around 14 % of EU GDP, accounting for roughly €1.8 trillion annually. This makes cities key to boosting demand for sustainable zero-emission construction sites. The current revision of the EU Clean Vehicles Directive offers an opportunity for cities to produce a user-friendly and effective tool for the procurement of zero-emission electric construction machinery and paving the way for cleaner and healthier cities.
