When
she was just a baby, Lucy the Asian elephant was
orphaned in her native country of Sri Lanka. At
just two years old, Lucy was then sold to the Edmonton
Valley Zoo in the capital city of Alberta, Canada and
has called it home for decades.
While
she has been well cared for, the truth is that the
conditions Lucy has endured for most of her life are
simply not in her best
interests. Edmonton has a
frigid climate, as opposed to Lucy’s
native home in Sri Lanka. Lucy is kept entirely
isolated, despite the fact that Asian elephants
like her are inherently social creatures.
It’s
clear that a sanctuary, like the Elephant Sanctuary in
Tennessee which has offered to take Lucy in, would
provide a far better future for this sweet creature.
The
Elephant Sanctuary provides a spacious,
enriching environment in a warmer climate where
Lucy could socialize with other elephants and receive
specialized medical care. It’s time for the City of
Edmonton to prioritize Lucy’s well-being and give her
the life she deserves.
