Attached an article we are just revising and resubmitting that explains how forest cover loss (and gain) influences droughts and heatwaves (already public at arXiv preprint server).
Not a positive story, but an important message.
In brief, we show how reductions in forest cover influence land-ocean temperature-differences which can reach a threshold where they block regional circulation (and atmospheric moisture transport.) Our analyses indicate that conditions in Eurasia are already close to this threshold. This results in greater fluctuations in the continental water cycle (droughts and floods).
It is a technical article but it underlines the fundemental importance of sustaining and regaining forest for keeping the world wet, pleasant and productive.
