The Retail
Council of Canada (RCC) is an organization dedicated to
representing the interests of retail businesses across the
country, from groceries to pharmaceuticals to general
merchandise. Several years ago, the RCC promised to
prioritize farmed animals' welfare by phasing out
cruel gestation cages for pigs and tiny battery cages for
egg-laying hens. These changes were set to be implemented by
2022 and 2025 respectively — until the RCC abruptly changed course this year,
reneging on all its previously-made
commitments.
Gestation crates are metal cages
just a few inches larger than the pregnant pigs locked up
inside them, each held in a cramped individual cell for months
until they give birth. Battery cages are on average
smaller than a single piece of printer paper,
and hens are squished into these crushingly small containers
for their entire lives. Factory farms use
these torture chambers in order to pack as many animals into a
building as possible, turning them into meaningless objects
devoid of life, just so farm executives can squeeze out as
much profit as possible. But pigs and chickens
experience pain, wants, and feelings — and right now, they're
suffering. Sign the petition to demand the Retail Council
of Canada show some integrity and remain true to its animal
welfare promises!
Thank you,
