CENN’s Green Café Re-Launch: Screening of “Solar Mamas”
On the 11th of March, in Divan, CENN’s Green Café initiative will be
re-launched with the screening and discussion of an inspiring documentary
which raises important questions about topics such as community-based
development, gender equality, environmental sustainability and poverty.
Solar Mamas (2012) is a documentary about Rafea, an uneducated woman who has
never left her tiny village of tents in Jordan. In the film, she travels to
India to become a solar-energy engineer, hoping she can return to help her
village become sustainable and self-sufficient. But learning about the
electrical components without being able to read, write or understand
English is the easy part. Indeed, Rafea faces many challenges, including the
possibility of losing her children, if she wants to complete the course.
This event is part of CENN’s Green Café campaign, a monthly happening open
to everyone which aims at outlining the social and cultural realities within
which the environmental issues of our time are embedded. The structure of
these events will be simple: a screening or a presentation followed by a
discussion to communally reflect upon and question the messages of the films
and presentations.
The event is free of charge and will take place in Tbilisi, in the
downstairs room of Divan, a café/bar located at 3/5 Tabidze St. from 6:30 pm
to 8:30 pm on the 11th of March. A short introduction will be given in
Georgian but some knowledge of English will be preferable to understand the
film and take part in the discussion.
