Indigenous
leaders went to court to secure their
territories | |
A historic fight
for justice:
Last week,
60 communities from the Cuatro
Cuencas, Loreto went to court to secure
their right to land and reinforce their demand
for compensation from the oil industry for years
of land exploitation.
A ruling in favor
of the communities would secure their
ancestral territory, grant them economic
compensation and guarantee a future for the
new generation.
Moreover, a win in court
would represent a beacon of hope for other
Peruvian communities fighting for their land
rights. | |
A day in
court:
Apus Alfonso
Lopez, Federico Díaz, and Aurelio Chino spoke
truth to power. They demanded accountability for
oil company PlusPetrol and asserted their rights
to a healthy environment.
Lawyer
Henry Carhuatocto explained the importance of
the ruling for land rights in Peru and Latin
America. | |
| | |
International
solidarityAllies from around the
world stood in solidarity with Loreto. The week
was filled with activities in Loreto and Lima,
where the Apus and their lawyers interacted with
the public, the press, and the
judges.
