Here's
what you need to know about the
report:
- Globally,
93% of all children 18 years old or
younger are exposed to levels of fine
particulate matter higher than the WHO air
quality guidelines.
- 630
million of those children are 5 years old or
younger, including 98% of all
children under 5 living in low & middle
income countries.
- In
2016, 543,000 deaths of children under 5
years old were attributed to the joint
effects of ambient and household air pollution.
This number rises to 595,000 when counting all
children under 15 years old.
- 9%
of the total number of deaths due to air
pollution were children.
And
some good news:
- Mayors of the world’s
big cities are already committing to the
bold action required to deliver clean, safe air
for all to breathe.
- 26 cities have already
committed to C40's Green
& Healthy Streets
Declaration. The Declaration
commits mayors to procure only zero-emission
buses from 2025 and ensure that a major area of
their city is zero emission by
2030.
