Vladimir,
It's a
nightmare come to life — being made to marry someone against
your will. This problem is neither one of the past nor of some
far distant place. It is happening now, in 2020, and in many,
many parts of the world. One such place is the UK,
where girls — most often minors — are sent away by
family or guardians against their will and forced to marry
someone in another country. Forced marriage is a form
of slavery, with an unbalanced power dynamic often reinforced
by a huge age or wealth gap. It also usually involves some
type of abuse. The UK claims to be fighting hard to rescue
these girls from such a horrific
situation.
But it turns out that after
rescue, girls are regularly asked to cover the costs
of their own salvation. This is not only morally
abhorrent, retraumatizing victims who are usually financially
devastated from what they just went through — it also
literally disincentivize girls from asking for help, fearful
that they can't afford it. And if they in fact cannot
cover the costs, they are forced to take out huge loans that
will follow them for years, reminding them of their painful
past and making a successful future nearly impossible. As one
professor of criminology put it, "Protection should not have a
price tag." Sign the petition if you want the UK to end this
ridiculous policy of charging victims for their own
rescue!
Thank you,
