Members of the United Nations Security Council will hold a public meeting on Sunday to discuss the ongoing conflict between Israeli and Palestinian forces after failing to reach consensus on a resolution during two meetings earlier this week. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has appealed for immediate cease-fire in the region as violence between the two sides escalates for the fifth consecutive day.

Production of COVID-19 vaccines around the world must double and distribution must be more equitable to end the pandemic, says United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, noting that some developed countries have purchased more vaccines than needed while some developing countries have yet to receive even one dose. Guterres is also pressing officials at the World Health Organization to approve Russia's Sputnik V coronavirus vaccine for emergency use.

Reports of domestic violence and gender-based disappearances and deaths have climbed sharply amid the pandemic, while movements against policies aimed at ensuring gender equity have gained ground in many regions, warns Dubravka Simonovic, United Nations special rapporteur on violence against women, as the world marks 10 years since the initial signing of the Istanbul convention on gender-based violence. "We have a pandemic of violence against women that was not addressed properly in a huge number of states," Simonovic says.

Alok Sharma, president of this year's United Nations climate summit, is urging countries around the world to commit to ending their reliance on coal power ahead of the event this November. "...let's make Cop26 the moment we leave [coal power] in the past where it belongs, while supporting workers and communities to make the transition, creating good green jobs to fill the gap," Sharma says in a script for an announcement expected today.

Military forces from Eritrea and Ethiopia continue to work together to block humanitarian aid access to the majority of communities in Ethiopia's Tigray region, despite Ethiopian President Abiy Ahmed's pledge over a month ago that soldiers were withdrawing from the region, United Nations officials report. "Of the three million people targeted to receive emergency shelter and non-food items, only 347,000 people, that is about 12 per cent, had been reached since 3 May," says UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric.
