PRESS RELEASE

Enhancing Gender Equality in Georgia

Tbilisi. 27 February 2013 – The National Action Plan on Gender Equality for
2011 – 2013 was the topic of a conference organised today, 27 February 2013,
by the Gender Equality Council of the Parliament of Georgia and the UN joint
programme “To Enhance Gender Equality in Georgia”.

The event brought together representatives of the Parliament, key
ministries, civil society and international organizations.

The Vice Speaker of the Parliament and the Chair of the Gender Equality
Council Manana Kobakhidze and Deputy Head of the United Nations Development
Programme (UNDP) in Georgia Inita Paulovica addressed the participants at
the opening session.

“Georgia has made significant progress in advancing gender equality, both in
terms of legislation and the implementation of the international
conventions. Still, there is a long way to go to ensure equal opportunities
for women and men in all areas of development and the equal access to
decision making. Open discussion about the remaining challenges is vital as
it lays the ground for a new national action plan. The United Nations is
happy to support this process”, Inita Paulovica said.

The conference reviewed the implementation of the Gender Equality National
Action Plan 2011-2013, which was designed to promote equal participation of
women and men in decision making, as well as to support the implementation
of gender equality policies in the areas of education, health, social
welfare, economy, environment and peace building.

The participants also discussed the objectives of the next Action Plan and
the steps to be made for its development and adoption.
