Whales can’t speak for themselves—but you can.

 

Ship collisions and noise are pushing whales to the brink–but there’s a simple solution. Slowing down ships could save thousands of whales and other marine life. Urge your leaders to commit to real ocean protection at the upcoming global summit!

Every year, countless whales die horrible deaths from collisions with speeding ships. [1] While deafening engine noise makes it difficult for them to communicate and find food. [2]

In a few months, our leaders will meet at the UN Ocean Conference to agree on action to protect marine life. [3] 

 

We have a simple but efficient demand: slowing ships down by 20% could prevent up to 78% of deadly whale collisions. [4] But if we want our leaders to take notice, they need to hear this call from thousands of citizens.

 

Public mobilisation has already brought us closer to real ocean protection. Thanks to pressure from thousands of Europeans, more and more countries are saying NO to digging, dredging and destroying the deep sea for minerals. [5]

 

Now we have an opportunity to do even more for the Blue Planet. Add your name to slow down ships and speed up ocean protection. OceanCare, the marine conservation advocates behind this petition, will deliver it to those in power at the upcoming global conference. Every signature counts!

Beyond collisions, shipping has broader impacts. In some areas, ship noise has doubled every decade for 60 years, creating an underwater acoustic fog that prevents whales from communicating, finding food, and navigating. [6]

 

Even marine protected areas offer little safety. Current voluntary speed recommendations are widely ignored. 

 

In the Northwestern Mediterranean, the home of fin whales and sperm whales, 80% of merchant vessels continue to travel at dangerous speeds above 10 knots. [7] Without mandatory limits, these "protected" areas remain death traps for endangered whales.

 

To protect whales and marine life from speeding ships and other threats, we need our leaders to step up now. The UN Ocean Conference is their chance to do just that. Add your voice now so that those in power hear it loud and clear at the upcoming conference.
