Central Asia Editor at The Third Pole (Part-time)

 

Location: Central Asia

Position: Regional Editor

Hours: 1 day per week

Contract type: Fixed term (6 months)

Salary: TBC

Description


The Third Pole is looking for a Central Asia regional editor to join the team. The editor will work remotely with our London, Delhi and Beijing offices. The ideal candidate would have a keen interest in climate change and environmental issues, Central Asia, and international affairs. S(he)would be proactive, highly organised and self-motivated, with relevant professional experience in journalism, research or policy. S(he) would have excellent Russian writing, editing and verbal communications skills, enough knowledge of English to be able to translate articles from Russian into English or check translations and to be able to interact fluently with colleagues outside the Central Asia region. (S)he would have an aptitude for digital technologies and a high level of accuracy and attention to detail in her/his work.

 

About us

 

The Third Pole supports in-depth, non-partisan and original coverage of all aspects of water in the countries of the Himalayan region and the Lancang-Mekong basin, to stimulate informed debate and to promote cooperation on transboundary river management. We are now expanding our coverage into Central Asia to cover the Amu Darya and Syr Darya river basins.

 

Over the years, the pioneering online forum, thethirdpole.net, has established a reputation as the source of accessible, high-quality and balanced material on all aspects of transboundary water in the Himalayan region.

 

The Third Pole is a project of the China Dialogue Trust, which disseminates high-quality information and promotes communication on environment and climate change in both Chinese and English.

 

We provide a space for open discussion, to inform and to contribute to equitable and constructive solutions to global environmental problems.

 

China Dialogue Trust’s primary vehicle is its unique, bilingual web platform, chinadialogue.net. China Dialogue Trust has offices in London, Beijing and staff across South and Southeast Asia, and Latin America.

 

About the role

This is an exciting opportunity to work as an editor for The Third Pole as a key part of its international team and spearhead its work in Central Asia.

 

Essential skills and experience

·           excellent Russian writing and editing skills;

·           proficient English language skills;

·           significant experience working as a journalist or in a communications role for an NGO;

·           strong networks among journalists, NGOs and policymaker in the region;

·           proven interest in and knowledge of environment and climate-change issues;

·           experience in web publishing, social media and/or digital tools;

·           strong project management and problem-solving skills;

·           flexibility and ability to multi-task, verbal and cross-cultural communications skills;

·           ability to work independently.

 

Desirable skills

·           interest in or knowledge of water issues in Asia;

·           regional (e.g. Kyrgyz, Kazakh, Uzbek etc.) language skills.

 

Main responsibilities

 

Editorial

·           writing, researching and commissioning content about water, the environment and regional cooperation and China’s impacts in Central Asia;

·           liaising with The Third Pole editorial teams and production manager.

 

Communications and Marketing

·           developing syndication and content sharing relationships with regional and vernacular media;

·           promoting content via social media and other publishing platforms.

 

Network Building

·           liaising with contacts and partners to build a regional network of contributors and a dedicated readership.
