Earth Day
On 22 April 2016, as part
of the Clean-up Georgia campaign, a clean-up and
greening activity was
organised around Lisi Lake (next to the new
hippodrome). The event was
organised by the Greens Movement of
Georgia/Friends of the Earth Georgia,
with the support of the Ministry of
Environment and Natural Resources
Protection and Tbilisi City Hall. During
the action, a 1 hectare area was
cleaned of rubbish with about 2 m3 of waste
collected and taken to the
landfill.
Along with the organisers, 11th grade students and teachers
from Public
School N55, and members of staff from the French Embassy
participated in the
event. Overall 40 volunteers took part. After the
clean-up action,
volunteers planted 22 cedar trees.
Earth Day was
first celebrated worldwide in 1970 when millions of people
came out to
protect our planet. This is one of the largest environmental
campaigns
uniting the international community to protect their living
environment
through various environmental activities. Worldwide
environmental activities
are carried out on this day making Earth Day a day
of action.
Since
1990 the Greens Movement of Georgia/Friends of the Earth Georgia have
celebrated Earth Day on a permanent basis with large-scale events. In
addition to Tbilisi, Earth Day was celebrated by regional organisations in
several municipalities.
The Clean-Up Georgia campaign is being
organised within the project Clean-Up
Georgia—Phase III and implemented by a
consortium of NGOs made up of the
Greens Movement of Georgia/Friends of the
Earth Georgia, the Georgian
Society of Nature Explorers—Orchis, and
Ecological Awareness and Waste
Management, in collaboration with the Solid
Waste Management Company, with
support from the Ministry of Environment and
Natural Resources Protection of
Georgia, and funded by the Swedish
Government.
