Persistent inequalities are impeding efforts to control HIV and AIDS and the global community must increase investments in fighting the disease, especially in lower income countries, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres says in a report published ahead of a UN General Assembly meeting on AIDS. "Ending AIDS as a public health threat by 2030 is still within reach -- many countries are showing that rapid progress against HIV is possible when evidence-informed strategies and human rights-based approaches are adopted," says UNAIDS Executive Director Winnie Byanyima.

Close to three-quarters of female journalists have faced abuse or harassment on the internet, and rising online violence correlates with an increase in physical attacks against women in the media, a study from UNESCO concludes. "Some journalists reported threats because they were covering elections or conflicts, or because they were covering stories related to women's rights, or because they are reporting issues that are wrongly identified as 'male coverage', such as sports," says Guilherme Canela, who heads UNESCO's freedom of expression and the safety of journalists division.
