United Nations High Commissioner
for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet this week
warned India against using legislation governing
foreign aid to target human rights activists or
organizations, and urged authorities to free an
83-year-old priest being detained on terror
charges. Indian officials dismissed Bachelet's
criticism, asserting that working to promote
human rights does not justify violations of the
law. Full Story: Reuters

children around the world lived in households
earning less than $1.90 per day before the
pandemic began and that number is likely to
increase significantly, reversing progress made
toward eliminating child poverty, according to
an analysis by UNICEF and the World Bank.
"Extreme poverty deprives hundreds of millions
of children of the opportunity to reach their
potential, in terms of physical and cognitive
development, and threatens their ability to get
good jobs in adulthood," says World Bank
Director of Poverty and Equity Carolina
Sanchez-Paramo. Full Story: The Hindu (India)/Press Trust of
