Georgia to Start Measurement of Greenhouse Gas (GHG)
Emissions on Landfills
Within the WMTR Program
Framework
For the first time in Georgia, greenhouse gases (GHG)
emissions from
landfills are going to be measured, and subsequently, the
negative impacts
of landfills on the environment will be
assessed.
On March 10, 2016, the USAID-funded Waste Management
Technologies in Regions
(WMTR) program transferred to the Solid Waste
Management Company of Georgia
(SWMCG) (part of the Ministry of Regional
Development and Infrastructure of
Georgia), portable equipment for measuring
GHG emissions from landfills.
Within the event, a memorandum of
understanding was signed between the WMTR
program and SWMCG, about providing
assessment of GHG emissions from the
landfill and preparation of the
relevant baseline information as well as a
mitigation action plan. The
baseline information will be used for the
development of landfill closure
and after-care plans.
USAID Mission Director, Mr. Douglas H.
Ball, attended the official ceremony
for the GHG measuring equipment at
Rustavi landfill. Following the signature
of the MoU, Mission Director
personally participated in demonstration
greenhouse gas emission measurement
at the above-mentioned landfill, along
with SWMCG Director, Mr. Giorgi
Shukhoshvili and CENN Executive Director,
Ms. Nana
Janashia.
By means of the above equipment, methane gas generated
at the landfills of
Georgia and their adverse environmental impact will be
measured. The
baseline information obtained from measurements will help
Georgia to fulfill
the responsibilities undertaken under EU Association
Agreement and Paris
Climate Change Agreement – to assess and reduce methane
and other greenhouse
gas emissions affecting the global climate
change.
It should be noted that WMTR will continue close
cooperation with SWMCG on
the above issues after the transfer of the
equipment. The next step includes
provision of trainings on the use of GHG
measuring equipment.
Waste Management Technologies in Regions (WMTR) was
launched on March 18,
2014. The initiative is funded by the U.S. Agency for
International
Development (USAID) and implemented by the International
City/County
Management Association (ICMA), together with CENN[2] – a local
partner and a
sub-recipient.
WMTR is assisting the Government of
Georgia in designing an adequate waste
management system in the regions of
Adjara and Kakheti. The program
objective is to support a cleaner and
healthier environment, minimize
adverse impacts from waste on human health
and natural resources, and reduce
greenhouse gas emissions from
landfills.
