The World Food Programme has been awarded this year's Nobel Peace Prize for its "efforts to prevent the use of hunger as a weapon of war and conflict." Data from the agency indicates more than 821 million people around the world face chronic hunger, and the WFP has said that the economic effects of the coronavirus could drive a "hunger pandemic."

The World Health Organization will release a digital stress management guide through WhatsApp, as well as stickers on Facebook Messenger promoting discussion of mental health, as it marks World Mental Health Day on Saturday. "As we continue to live through a global pandemic, we need movement on mental health, perhaps more than we have ever needed it before," says WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Young women are stepping up to effect change around the globe -- and yet girls in many parts of Africa are denied basic human rights, and girls make up a disproportionate number of AIDS victims in the region, write Winnie Byanyima, Audrey Azoulay, Natalia Kanem, Henrietta Fore and Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, the heads of UNAIDS, UNESCO, the United Nations Population Fund, UNICEF and UN Women, respectively. Patricia Espinosa, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, is urging world leaders to meet the 2020 deadline for submitting updated climate action plans to the UN, echoing a plea from climate-vulnerable nations for global action.
