new Secretary General to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and
Development (OECD), one of the most powerful organisations in shaping climate
action around the world.As leader of the OECD, Cormann will be able to either
squash global climate ambition, or supercharge it -- uniting the world in the
face of this unprecedented challenge.Unfortunately, Cormann has a horrendous
track record on climate, even calling the goal of becoming carbon neutral
by 2050 “extremist”. But during his election campaign, he assured his critics
that he's “absolutely committed to ambitious and effective action on climate
change”. As he takes office, Cormann will be in the global
spotlight. Let’s welcome him with messages holding him accountable and on

Cormann’s
first big test is already waiting for
him: The powerful International Energy
Agency just published its first ever 1.5ºC
aligned energy analysis and announced there’s no
need for new fossil fuel projects. It’s a big
deal, but some OECD countries are already
pushing back. Will Cormann rally
member states to support and encourage the IEA
to align their future reports with the 1.5ºC
limit instead? Will he pull his
weight to ensure the agency from now on focuses
their analysis on where we need to go and how to
get there -- rather than emboldening the
catastrophic status
quo? The path he
chooses now could seal our planet’s fate. Send
