We all know the
drill. Pharmaceutical medicines cost an arm and a leg because
Big Pharma companies claim it's necessary in order to
compensate them for all the costs of research and
experimentation required to come up with these treatments in
the first place. Under this system, it's considered inevitable
that some people can afford medications while others can't,
and must face the consequences. But when it comes to poorer
countries in the COVID-19 era, such profiteering arguments are
morally untenable. A murderous pandemic should never be seen as
another "ripe opportunity" to exort the world's most
vulnerable, impoverished people. This is literally life or
death.
COVID-19 is a pandemic that has
taken more than 2.3 million lives worldwide. In this
environment, pharmaceutical remedies — specifically, vaccines
manufactured by giant international conglomerates like Pfizer,
Moderna, AstraZeneca, and Johnson & Johnson — are absolute
must-haves. In some nations on earth, it's hard enough to come
by clean drinking water, let alone clean personal protective
equipment like masks and gloves. Now, giant multinational
corporations are literally dangling a miracle inoculation over
the heads of citizens in these countries. And they're saying
"pay up... or else." This is beyond cruel and
unethical. Tell Pfizer, Johnson & Johnson, Moderna, and
AstraZeneca to do the right thing by providing poorer
countries with vaccines at-cost — with no profit-gauging baked
in.
Thank you,

P.S. Wealthy,
industrialized nations are competing to accrue as many
vaccines as possible, while poorer countries are left behind.
